I recently purchased a titled 2000 Buell M2 frame for an electric custom. My plan from here is to first find a decent motor, some good batteries, and design a control system. Once that's done, I want to get a swing arm and all the rear wheel stuff and determine what I'm to do for gearing etc.

The problem should be obvious to you Buell pros at this point: with no engine, I have nowhere to mount the rear suspension. I've seen a few threads here where they use XB rear parts on the M2 frame, but I couldn't see in any of the pictures where exactly the shock mounted onto the frame.

Any insight would be appreciated. I'll take anything that works, my budget isn't really set at any limit but the main thing is that I'd like to keep the metalwork to a minimum.

On an unrelated note: Have you seen the Documentary "Charged" about the electric GP bikes at the Isle of Man?? Might be enlightening : )

On this electric project I would not expect that vibration would be an issue like it is with a normal sportster motor Buell - so you could easily pitch the isolators and change them out for a more solid mount.

But for the other top shock bikes, how many miles have been put on them, and are they holding onto the isolators OK? Are the Isolators displaying a tendency to twist? I ask because the big difference between Buell and FXR/FLT is how the isolators are installed ("Backwards" on the Buell) , and on the Buells the suspension is completely independent of the isolators with regards to the swing arm pivot.

With the upper shock mount mounted to the frame, the isolator becomes part of the swing arm pivot assembly. Without rehashing an older thread, I question whether that is going to cause the isolators to have more of a tendency to twist off of the locating pin.

This isn't idle picking at someone else's design - I have a related project in the jig and am about to go through some major work to keep the suspension tied to the engine. If anyone with a top shock conversion can confirm they have put decent milage (say, 5000 miles or better) after the conversion and have not had an issue, I can go back to a MUCH simpler design for this one.

Ok, I see a little bit better now, I'll need some custom metalwork.

Which would end up costing me the least in adapters to fit on my M2 frame? What angle should I shoot for when welding the top shock mount?

Angle doesn't matter. The critical dimensions are:

Pivot to top mount
Pivot to bottom mount
Pivot to axle
Top mount to bottom mount.

So, put the mount where it makes sense, then give those 4 dimensions to a good shock manufacturer and they can work out the spring rate and damping (You'll also want to specify a payload weight).

If you are scrapping a shock off of another bike, capture those 4 dimensions and replicate them when putting in your stock mount.

As far as adapters for the frame - I would envision nothing more complex than some plate to go in where the Isolators would normally go - weld it into place and use the existing threaded cylindrical bearing carriers to mount the swing arm through a hole in the plate.

Thanks! Do you have a diagram with those labelled I could look at? I think I can work out models for the damping and spring rate if I have it drawn out, I remember spring-mass-damper being a single order problem (the only easy kind of calculus).

Necro Bump:
Been looking for a shock manufacturer to get me what I need, but all I've gotten so far are companies that want top sell me something tailored to a specific production model bike.
