Hi everyone. I'm new to the forum, and still pretty new to Buell's, as this is my first one. I have a 95 Thunderbolt S2, and lets leave it at she's had a rough 20k. But, I've sorted out a lot of the carb issues, and ignitions issues, and am now faced with a really simple, but mind blowing problem. When I got the bike, the 5th gear output shaft had the needle bearings uncovered, no dust seal, no oil seal, nothing. I could see the needles spin at all times, and now the issue. It's pouring primer out of the bearing. Now, my manual shows there is a seal of some sorts, but when I went to Harley and got the "seal", it would not go on the shaft. Is there a seal inside the trans that I can replace to stop oil from getting to those bearings, or is there suppose to be a seal stopping oil from getting out? Any help is very much appreciate

Two seals, one goes inside the output assembly that the final drive front sprocket... about the size of a quarter. If the needle bearing is walking out, it can be pushing that seal out.

The other seal goes around the outside of that 5th gear drive output assembly.

Either can leak or pop out. Running your belt too tight can make it worse, damaged bearings can make it worse.

Mees, I read both of those articles, and I found a lot of helpful info, and it sounds like I need to get a few seals. does anyone know what the part number is for the inner and outer seals so I can go to my dealer tomorrow? It sounds like I need to maybe order some bearings too? I did go a Kevlar belt not too long ago. And as for the primary level, how would I check to see if it is rising?

You have to pull the tranny to replace the inner needle and outer 5th gear drive assembly bearings.

Start by carefully looking at what you can see of those needle bearings. You can't see much, but if they are rusty they need to be replaced. Also remove the belt and put it in neutral and turn the output sprocket by hand and feel if it has any catches or crunches, if so that also means those needle bearings need to be replaced.

If the needle bearing cage is just walking out and popping that seal out, others have reported short term success just pushing them back in. I don't know that we ever got any long term updates as to if it was a long term fix or not.

So I am looking at the tool in the book to pull the main drive gear, and now my question is am I going to have to split the entire case to pull that shaft to stop this whole leak? Or can I use the tool while the case is still together? And thank you all for the help. Hope you all are having a great Christmas!

The tranny will come out without splitting the case. That changed with the xb engine.

If you don't need to replace the bearings or the inner seal, you don't need to pull the tranny. If the bearings look good, try just installing the outer seal. You know there's a leak there.

Take note of the comment Bill made about the belt tension. Tension should be checked with the rear shock disconnected and the swingarm parallel to the engine. This is the tightest the belt will get as the suspension moves. Or, rather than go through all that, just run it "scary loose".

Correct, if that 5th gear drive assembly has to be removed, you have to remove the tranny first.

Replace the seals first, cheap and easy. They will either stay put or pop out again.

Even with the job done right with new parts, I needed to use some yamabond stuff to hold that seal in there.

Ok. So I am going to just try and get a new seal tomorrow and a quart of primer. I hope that solves my issues so I can get back to riding my bike

One of the things I always do when I have the tranny pulled is to slather some synth grease in the 5th gear bearing. I did this on my M2 way back when. Much time and miles later I had to pull the tranny to replace 2nd gear, the grease was still there. I was really surprised it hadn't washed out. It show how little tranny oil get up to that bearing.
I've put grease on every one ever since.

Brad

So, I actually went and got a few seals from my dealer. I got the 12030 seal, and the two for the 5th gear shaft. The 12030, didn't go on, or in my 5th gear shaft, and with the other two seals new, it still pours out. It looked promising, but leaked on a test run. If I had the primary chain too tight, it could cause all these issues, could it not? And or, my kevlar belt, right?

Did you clean everything that was covered with oil?
And was there was any play at the front pulley? (with the belt removed or very loose)
And how high or low were the oil niveas?

I have cleaned the pulley many times and it all comes back out of the shaft were th. Bearing is. And how it is coming out, it looks like it's being pushed like it was from a low pressure pump. And I'll check to see how loose it is with out the belt on it.

What is an "oil nivea"?
I'm feeling stupid so I searched the word and the only thing I can find is on Wiki "Nivea comes from the Latin word niveus/nivea/niveum, meaning 'snow-white". I've seen the Nivea brands of body lotion, but this has me puzzled.
HELP!!!

So, I don't know how I missed it before, but, I had my bike running today, and actually watched where it normally leaks. So, it doesn't leak right away, but it does leak eventually. And, I actually could see the outer needle bearings walk in and out. Are they allowed to do that at all? Or, are they toasted?

Ok, I'm going to "man up" here and admit that I've never heard of that word either, but in my defense I do know what "level" means!!!!!

4speed - don't feel bad...I didn't know what nivea meant either! I couldn't let you "man up" all by yourself and just sit in the shadows! I have heard of niveau, but only used in terms of a level of achievement, etc., not level of oil!

Brother in Buells does live in the Netherlands, though, so may be a language or dialect thing?

Mees -I hope you don't take offense, I thought it was kind of humorous. You have a cool job, by the way...I bet there isn't another farrier on the site! Love your personal quote about punishment in the corner...happened to me MANY times at home and in school while I was growing up!

Don't worry guy's ,i had also a laugh about the HELP writing Jeff did

In Holland there are a lot of words that you write different but have the same meaning and vice versa
,to make things easier NOT!

And Dave ,thanks for the compliments on my job! it was not what i wanted to be when growing up ,but i have no regrets and like this work very much ,and every day is different!

i also can remember the times i spent in corners or hallways at school very well!
When a teacher got mad i could not keep my face straight and had to grin ,so they thought i did something or was not taking it serious.
But frankly that quote is from a 2002 buell brochure ,i thought it was a funny one
because as kids it was punishment and years later on a buell we like it!

Have a happy ,healthy and joy full new year!
