Thank for that Easyrider, how did you stop frame springing in when swing arm removed to get belt out?

Hi Lakes, the frame don't move. very strong, it is the left side isolator you press in to make room to get the left isolator out, that is why you need to remove the lower rear tie rod connection

thanks Bud, i've never attempted this job, but a friend, that raced an X1 about 12 years back & he used to ride 1000kilometers to the race tracks, race for three day's in championship events then ride the x1 1000 k home. i asked him about the rear isolator & how hard to change them. he said he broke a belt on the X1 once and was the hardest job he has ever done to replace it.

so i'm just collecting knowledge, in case it happens to me. but i think i'd go to a chain drive if the belt broke. what do you think?

Hi Lakes,

S1, M2, S3 belt change are somewhat challenging because off the construction off the frame

X1, with detachable right frame piece ( there are 3 screws holding the right side foot peg support to the frame ) , i consider easy, and can be done with basic hand tools.

changing to chain,
that is really personal preference,
for changing yes, is easier,
long run, maintenance , no crush drive , grease every where,
i like belts :-)

thanks Bud, i like belts too, but don't like one breaking on a trip, long way from home no spare. i keep chains lubed & very clean. but while the belt is working i'm staying with it, till the day it breaks. then chain , but the best chain i can buy, best sprockets too.

no problem,
long trips i pack a spare belt,
because i know they can be a pain to get one ( for my Uly )
changing one is easy, but waiting on breakdown service ect..is a pain

but when you check your belt on ware it can still break on you with rocks stone chip ect.
but leaving for a long trip with a worn belt is asking for it
( check the inside, base off the teeth , if you see cracks forming there, better order your self a spare )

Bud as i said if my belt breaks there won't be a replacement belt at all, i'll go chain , have ridden HD's many years had a few with belts never got to the stage i broke a belt as i changed over to chain my 01 Dyna twin cam came with belt, had a long run planned that i was also competing in a drag race event. did not trust the belt to get me home. so converted to chain that was in 2003 90,000 & same chain still there i just sold that bike & inspected chain & sprockets all still good. was the best chain i could buy at time & best quality sprockets. i cleaned chain regular & lubricated regular too
