Good morning BWB. As of last night this is my 2000 m2 cyclone. Got it from my bike mechanic 1/2 mile down the street for 3g with two brand new tires and battery and fresh oil change with 10,555 on odo. He has worked on harleys all throughout his life and when i told him i wanted to upgrade from my suzuki maruader vz800 he started this buell up for me and i was instantly sold I am the 3rd owner but i have checked on the hd site an my vin says i still need the recall so i found a buell service mechanic 45-60min south of me in Rahway to order the part. I also noticed, should look into upgrading my shifter? The front end on this is not stock? As well as the rear plate holder? I was told this has a carb kit on it. There is aftermarket air intake, but i am not sure wether the exhaust is stock or not. There is a black box with fins on it by the bend in the exhaust, seems kinda oily, is this normal? Also pictured is a black box behind the battery as well oily. I would like to ride this as far into the season as i can. I was on the highway going 80 around 11pm last night and just my legs were cold. I live in northern nj. But this buell is so smooth and quick im in love with it. The windshield is perfect i love it. Any help or suggestions greatly appreciated. Thanks! Nice looking M2! -The front fairing is from an S3. -Looks like a race muffler and header -The rear license holder looks stock but is trimmed as most people do. -The shock looks like it is already the recall shock -The exhaust hanger is already the updated Y hanger -Black box with fins is the Voltage regulator. It may be oily from the oil filter above or the oil pressure sensor above leaking or just residue from last oil change. -Black cylinder shaped tube on right side of bike next to battery is a "catch can" and needs to be emptied at every gas fill up. It collects oil/water vapor from cylinder breathers instead of dumping them into carb as it did on stock. -Your belt is too tight. Factory service manual was wrong. Must be very loose or it will mess up bearings on wheel and transmission. -primary chain spec in manual is also wrong and it may be too tight as well. Very nice looking M2, congrats. |

Nice looking bike. M2s are great bikes, I have had mine for 11 years and love it more today than I did even when I bought it. Ride it and enjoy it. |

Thank you for a quick detailed reply. I am really happy with this bike. So is this shock an aftermarket? Cuz the vin said it was recalled on hd website. From what i have been able to gather the primary chain should have 3/4" play on the tight spot and on the drive belt it should have 2" play on the tight spot? I am surprised you could tell me all this info about shock an hanger an catch can, the pics are a little on the dark side lol. Also Is this what is known as the boomerang shifter? |

Pipe appears to be the Borla full system (nice exhaust), or possibly a Staintune pipe but those are pretty rare in the US, more likely the Borla. The race pipe says "Buell" on the muffler and is finished with a machined surface, not polished, but has a dual inlet similar to the pipe on your bike. With the intake/exhaust and breather catch can set up tastefully done as yours is it's pretty unlikely that the carb was ignored. Shock is an upgraded Buell part (originally stock on the X1), but is the most modern recall replacement unit, if it feels exceptionally bouncy it may be blown and require replacement or rebuild. When you say "front end is not stock" are you referring to the fairing that Jim advised you on? Front end reference generally is regarding suspension and wheel, which appear to be stock from your photo's Additional info. Yes, that shifter is the "boomerang" shifter. Upgraded stock part has less slop, so proper primary chain adjustment as Jim mentioned and upgrading your shifter will improve your shifting, as will a synthetic 20/50 fluid in the primary. One tip that sometimes gets skipped: Always check your oil level with a warm engine or you will overfill your oil reservoir. This may actually be why the black box (oil res) behind your battery is oily. DO NOT add oil to a cold motor, you will over-fill, possibly blow the dipstick out of the oil res and make a nasty oily mess all over the back-end of your bike, and a slippery rear tire is dangerous. Another consideration, put a set of modern sport touring tires on that bike in stock sizes when you have a few bucks too, those D205's (or 207's?) are probably done. Great looking bike, congratulations on your purchase! One last thing - If you hit >enter< after attaching a pic they will stack vertically and not make your posting so wide. Might need a mod to fix that if you're unable to edit you posting at this point. |

No factory race pipe ever had dual inlets. Single 2.5" header collector, single inlet/outlet muffler in bare aluminum with riveted end caps. that was the only race exhaust ever offered by Buell. there was a performance Supertrapp slip-on offered but only for the stock headers. |

Littlebuggles i leaned the bike over and sure enough it said borla on the bottom. as for the front end, yes i ment to say the front fairing . My mechanic said these tires were new tires. the dunlap sportmax 207. He is a harley man so i am going to trust he knew about the oil, he did ask for the keys to start it up before he changed it. |

The napkins are probably there to keep the tail light wires from wiggling so much. They tend to wiggle right in half over time. They are also handy when you check oil. Don't know about the catch can. Is that a screw on the bottom or maybe a push button. You can probably attach a hose to hose barb and then twist the screw or push the button to drain. Or if you do it often enough just hold a napkin up to the hose barb. Can't watch video yet but the Borla is one of the better, or best exhaust for the M2. |

Welcome to the marque! That looks and sounds like a great bike. You might make sure the former owner did the primary chain adjuster, and, as said, your has quite a few important upgrades already done - front exhaust hanger and that is definitely a 2nd recall shock. There have been cases of dealers not recording the recall when performed so, you could go back if that one has failed. Re: the shifter - I made the change and the later X-1 shifter feels quite a bit more precise if you find one and have the coin. American Sport Bike sells the kit too. I like the look of the S3 fairing on the M2 as well. In fact, I like it a lot. |

The drive belt is borderline tight. Better loose than tight. We have a saying for belt tension "scary loose". Buellistic will chime in with an offer for the correct way to set belt tension. Take him up on his offer. Defiantly get the new style shifter, it makes a big difference. Make sure to not use Mobile 1 50-90 gear lube in the tranny, the stator won't like it.. Ditch the tires. Even if they look new, they loose plasticizers over time. Another words, they get hard. Besides, the Dunlops are a bit of a weird tire. TRy a set of Bridgestone Battlax BT=023's. I've had real good luck with them on my S2's and on my Cyclone. You can tell the PO was a Harley rider, check out the width of the chicken strips! Man, I have to get my Cyclone motor back together.. I miss that bike. Brad (Message edited by bluzm2 on November 01, 2013) |

its hard to see in the pics, but check the rear isolators - the updated ones should have a little bit of a rubber "tab" sticking out about 4'clock when facing it. they are a pain to replace, and be prepared to replace the belt at the same time if your belt looks at all worn. (at 11K it may look good, but its similar procedure to get it out, some do it anyway.) clean looking bike from the pics. my favorite buell. I love the fairing. might need to do that to mine |

"Always check your oil level with a warm engine or you will overfill your oil reservoir" I would add to that: When you shut the engine off, the oil starts to drain back down to the case. Check the oil immediately after you shut off the engine. And Never fill it more than half way between the marks on the dip stick. Over half way results in lots of oil escaping through the breather. I'm not sure why. As far as I know, no one is. I'd love to hear an explanation. Great find on the bike. FYI the difference between the rear shock on the M2 and the X1 is the remote reservoir. You have a better-than-stock, but still OEM, shock. Jeff |

Well my local HD buell dealer called me and they were able to get me a recall shock but from what i understand i have an updated one? So do i still go through with it and have it serviced? |

The recalled shock did not have the external reservoir like yours does. Yours has been replaced. It depends how knowledgeable they are as to your chances of them taking that one off and putting a brand new one on. They should have a list of recalls done to your bike trackable by the VIN #. |

Buy old one cheap shock that is already a leaker from ebay or classifieds and put on yourself. Take to dealer and have recall done, then you have a good spare for when the recall goes bad in a couple of years. When they do recall you don't get other one back as they disposition instructions in order to get paid. |

Doesn't the shock recall involve changing the front shock mount too? |

Yours is the short one already, so you need a leaker 14.8 shock. If you get a long one, you will need to get the front bracket with it. The longer shock bracket takes a different voltage regulator mount. |
