Im going to put bags on my S2 (bike just showed up last weekend!) and I already have the S2 bag style mount and the S3T bag conversion rack to put s3T bags on an S2. as I was mocking it up I found that my left rear mount tab for my rear body work is broken off and will need to be tig welded bag on (after one is fabricated of course) so as long as I have to take the bike in for some welding, I was going to have tabs welded on to the rear loop for the bag racks to mount to instead of using those rubber wrapped light duty hangars to wrap around a tube and hang something from...kind of a little on the light duty side and I figure they will break. the stock s2 rack mounts to the two tabs that the rear of the body work mounts to and then is suspended from the very rear loop with those hangars, the s3t bag style mounts at the same point with an extra support going down to the rear passenger pegs and then hangs from the rear loop the same way that the s2 style does..it just seems that as long as I am having one tab welded on I ought to have a few more welded on, each of the racks will have to have their own version of tabs welded on since they don't line up in the same position when mocked up, yet they will be hidden by the body work. Any input from the group on how well those work or any cautions on welding on some extra tabs for proper mounting of the bag racks? Im leaning towards having the tabs welded on since it will be getting 1 tab replaced and welded on anyway.... |

I thing the rubber metal strap clamps make more sense - you can get 'em here... http://www.mcmaster.com/#p-clamps/=pazwz6 I haven't seen one break yet - the rubber does a good job in keeping the metal from work hardening - and hopefully your not carrying more than 10 pounds or so in the bags... bummer about having to weld on the frame - should be tig, should be done as cool as possible - which means finding someone that is good and fast. Too much heat will lead to a future failure about two inches from the repair. For that reason, I actually personally prefer the strap clamps to welding on the tubing section of the frame. |

My straps were breaking regularly so I had tabs welded on just as you are talking about. Our bags are probably closer to fifteen pounds each and the welded tabs have been fine from Texas to British Columbia via Georgia, plus some added miles since. I also had a rear rack fabricated (at far greater cost than was worthwhile), which is also supported by the same tabs, carrying thirty pounds or more for the same distance. |
