So I've been working on tracking down where my charge seems to be going - on rides it'll start up and run ok but after riding a while when I come to a stop/slow down my engine light comes on, still running but will turn off once I get going up to speed. The light code is for low battery voltage, but - I had the battery load tested and it tested good, and I measured ACV coming from the stator to be a healthy 20v @ 1000rpm.

So my questions - Is the voltage regulator the next thing to check out? How do I test it? and, What else should I be checking that I'm not considering?

I would guess the trouble may be in your stator.

Pull the plug and check all three legs. Each should be approximately equal, voltage wise. Running of course.

@ 2000 RPM you want 38+ volts.

...and to do any serious troubleshooting, you're going to want the factory service manual...it's all in the book.

so an update - finally had enough time to commit tonight to really do some work. I ended up swapping out the garbage #8 connector with a bullet connector and some shrink wrap and finally started getting great charge. I rode it and it still seemed rough so I went ahead and did a TPS reset all by the book then rode for about an hour - I'm happy to say it feels like I've finally got maybe 85-90% of the bike's potential, but I did notice something else. Repeatable every time, if I ride a faster speed for a while (let's say ~75mph for 10-15 minutes) then decelerate to a slower speed (around 45-55mph) it doesn't really want to adapt to the throttle change and gets twitchy and poppy. Is this just me being paranoid while on a just post-TPS-reset ride, or is this something that can be shoehorned out?

I gotta hand it to you guys for helping me turn this bike from a pile of leaky garbage when I first got it to the great machine it is today - it feels good to have something to be genuinely proud of.

Not sure on DDFI-1, but I know on DDFI-II and III you need to do a long, steady-cruise ride after a TPS reset so the system can "learn" again based on the new zero point.

Reset again, then get on the highway and ride steady at speed (65mph? depends on your traffic flow) for about 20 minutes.

And always do your resets with a hot engine.
