OK, I've been riding the S2 more and more now that it finally has a stock muffler on it. Thing is....I can tell it isn't happy with the tune right now.

Stock S2 bottom end and jugs (heavy flywheel).
Thunderstorm pistons and heads (stock, not ported).
X1 cams.
S1W race ignition box
stock carb, 48/185, 2.5 turns (I think; will verify tommorrow)
stock intake
stock exhaust including muffler
stock S2T lowers (mentioned because of airflow).

Today was h-o-t. And humid. And I was getting a good bit of pinging at higher throttle openings. I'm going to pull back a little timing - it pings worst when leaving a stop, "lugging" it so I don't slip the clutch. If I slip the clutch..it pings less. I also noticed some WFO ping at any RPM.

It will, however, cruise comfortably at 100+ ; )

I need to check my plugs, 10R12A, and read them.

Power, when its cold and I can get non-ping throttle out of it, is strong all through the revs but it really flattens out when it gets hot. This will be a fun process...one change at a time...fiddle with jets...fiddle with timing...

If anyone has any thoughts for my wacko setup, I'm open to ideas. I'll post more once I get the plugs out (I never pull plugs out of a hot engine so it will sit and cool on the lift overnight, and I'll pull the plugs tomorrow along with checking timing and maybe fiddling with the jets (since I drained the bowl pulling into the garage, knowing I was going to dig into it).

I'm keeping the stock exhaust. The "easy way out" would be to remount the supertrapp...but I like the peaceful stock system enough that I want to tune for it and make the bike happy.

I don't have an answer, but I will be following this thread. I was always under the impression the Lightning heads, then the Thunderstorm heads held pinging at bay. With that being said, I won't if the heavy wheels aren't the detriment to the package you put together. The reason I say this, but someone more knowledgeable than myself, will chime in, is I never could weed out pinging in my 01 XLH1200. I have no pinging problems with my S1, and I beat on that bike. I'm to the point where I think these motors equipped with the heavy wheels is where the problem lies. Those are just my thoughts, and my thoughts alone.

No...it still sits patiently on the lift. Work, doctors appointments, and unusually nice weather have conspired to keep me out of the shop (the nice weather meaning that instead of dry, cooked, dead grass for August...It's been cool at night, warm during the day, with a regular dose of rain and I've had to mow twice a week...not twice a month like usual).

I should get a chance to tear into it over the 3 day weekend...

...one thing I do know is, my oil pressure sending unit is leaking. I have the parts book, but does anyone know offhand the auto crossover part? Might be easier to just hit NAPA after work one day...

Well, happy holiday weekend.

My Wrangler was making a grinding noise - drum brakes are the DEVIL. So today I mowed 4 acres, cleaned the house, rebuilt the evil drum brakes (after having to use a 5# sledgehammer to remove the rusted-on wheels - they're antiseized now!)...and finally got around to pulling the S2's plugs before I decided to go stand in the rain and enjoy myself.

Plugs are nice and tan, tells me good jetting. No salt-n-pepper, although I have heard some detonation. I'm going to pull a couple degrees out of timing and see how that does...

Well, ultra-scientifically I pulled out about half a notch of timing today.

What a difference up top! Lost a little down low...so I split the difference and put some timing back into it...and it pinged on me so I took it back out. Still not super-strong down low, but BOY does she run good over 3500 now! I actually had to watch the tach - 6k is easily attainable, and it gets there fast if I'm not paying attention!

Timing may be your only recourse if you're committed to the stock S2 muffler.

If it were me and I wanted better running with your motor set up, I might try fitting a stock '98 exhaust. 2.5" collector and higher flow muffler might open things up a little.

My old '98 S3 ran great with the stock muffler. Pulled cleanly to the top of the rev range even in the higher gears.

Alternately, if you can find a Buell factory race pipe or "Pro Pipe" as they're sometimes called.

They're not that loud with a bit of trigger discipline. Really wakes up a T-Storm motor.

I have Buell race systems on my S1W and my M2, I know them very well. Had a race muffler fitted to the S2 (with a 2" to 2.5" adaptor) for a while but I just prefer the quiet on a sport-tour bike. The hooligans are fine with a little crackle though ; )

I may keep an eye out for a stock t-storm exhaust...I could always test-fit the system from my Defender project to see how I like it before I spend the $$. My concern with that would be the stock S2 air cleaner...we'll see.

That said, though...I'm not unhappy with the way it runs. My main goal is just ending the ping - it runs great otherwise.

Before I fitted a Buell race exhaust to my T-Stormed S2 (fits great with stock aircleaner) I ran a '98 system for a year.

With the '98 2.5" header I used a later style ham can as the stocker interfered with the pipe. As seen here:

I had to change the air filter on mine, too, with the 98 S3 motor and exhaust.
It's a shame as I really like the way the S2 air filter looks.
