Fiberglass won't bond to recycled used panty hose and you'd still have the outgassing to contend with - I asked my buddy who's pretty talented and a Buell owner to boot. I got him hooked! You'd have to mount the alloy tank on rubber blocks, I would imagine. The vibration isn't any worse than it is on old British bikes. I'm going to write to racerparts and see what they have to say. | ||

****EDIT***** i emailed them to see if they might do a group buy!!!! might want to check with Holtworks, and see if they will do a group buy to the US???? probably have to ship to one place to save on the customs headache, but maybe if 10 people or so could get together, might save a few bucks??? I'm making progress on another front, maybe. I'm going to try the sandblast/epoxy powder coat route and see if that won't work out. I don't know if the nylon will withstand 3 minutes at 550 degrees? | ||

The 428 °F (220 °C) melting point of nylon 6 is lower than the 509 °F (265 °C) melting point of nylon 6,6.[2] The thermophysical properties of nylons can vary depending on formulation. Nylons have a melting point that ranges from approximately 172°c to 260°c Nylon 12 had the lowest melting point temperature, while nylon 6,6 had the highest reported value. I know, it's going to be close as to it surviving the process. Does anyone have a totally trashed tank and I can just send out a chunk to see if we end up with a puddle of goop? | ||

Ive been trying to work with a company that has experience working on powedercoating nylon with low temp powdercoat. its been a long process and not much progress. they took this on as a side test for me with the understanding that it would be a "when we have spare time we will work on it for you as a test to see what we can do"....so, far, they are having difficulty stripping the many coats of paint of the tank/....I'm not having much luck with forward momentum....maybe someone else will have better luck? I'm not quitting, just not making much progress.... | ||

i got a reply from Holt, they would be willing to do a 10% discount for a group buy of at least 10 tanks, someone would have to centralize a shipping point to make the import easier, and the tanks would be distributed once they are in country. that would make the tanks around $1125 plus freight. if there is some interest, i will start the group buy thread????? | ||

I dunno, Tom Kilroy was gracious enough to donate a tank to the cause so I'm going to try that 3 minute epoxy powder coating first. IF the tank doesn't turn into a blob and IF it seals in the fumes like I'm hoping we'll have a winner. If not, it's alloy tank or full tank bra time. Tank burka is more like it. | ||

I spoke w/ Joe Fazio at KG Coatings and he's going to do a trial tank for me as well using a phenolic coating. I've known him for a long time, he's a good guy and might be the solution if the powder coating turns the other tank into a blob. http://www.kgcoatings.com/index.php P.S. I shall keep everyone posted with how this all turns out. I think that Joe is on to something: Phenolic Coatings Phenolic coatings offer consistent high quality protection for a wide range of applications including immersion service for most acids, solvents, and salts. This coating is typically used where low pH environments and higher temperatures are factors. Phenolic coatings have excellent resistance to 92% - 98% sulfuric acid at temperatures up to 120°F. Phenolic coatings are also resistant to hydrochloric acid, phenol, anhydrous chlorobenzene, carbon tetrachloride, and many other chemicals. He said that he just built a new 15,000 square foot plant and they do the coatings right there so if this works it'll be great news. Just pop your tank in the mail and send it to Texas. All of his coatings that I've used are really good so I'm pretty optimistic about things. | ||

You'd have to use two blocks per side for where it contacts the frame for that. Maybe handgrips cut lengthwise or sorbothane blocks? | ||

I gave it a lot of thought about the vibration before I put a deposit on one of the alloy tanks. I figured that he has been making alloy tanks for old English 2 strokes and 4 strokes for over 20 years so I'm hoping that he has sorted out any vibration issues long ago. I will however be using some sort of rubber mounting. | ||

I just remembered: call up your friendly Moto Guzzi dealer and order 4 rear tank mounting rubbers from a Tonti framed model (V7 Sport up through the 1000S). They're held onto the frame rails with big cable ties and they'll hold the alloy tank up off of the frame. They're "D" shaped so you should be able to angle them until the tank sits right on a Buell. | ||

One gas tank is with the powder coater, one gas tank has been shipped to KG Industries. We'll see what happens. | ||

I sure hope you have better luck with the powder coater you are using than how mine is going. the guys I am still waiting on have had mine for about 5 months now and they still have not gotten to it...granted they were doing it as a side test but it really isn't going very well now, they have quit returning phone calls and they still have my tank! | ||

Have you taken steps to retrieve your tank yet? If they blow you off after two written attempts, open a claim with the Better Business Bureau. That always seems to light a fire under difficult vendors. Two minutes after the BBB contacts them they're suddenly very helpful. | ||

A low temperature powder coat will not work - the hook ripped right through the tank so it's up to KG Coatings. My S1 tank is en route, we'll see if it will first hold up to a half hour at 250 degrees and then will it keep the bubbles at bay. | ||
