did any buells come with a keyless gas cap?
like many, my cap locked up on me, and I havent had a 'normal' cap in years - duct tape holds it down ha (its a dragbike, doesnt see loads of action, duct tape works great)
but I would like to make it look a bit nicer, just need a funtioning cap that I dont have to pull the key out to refill etc

Blast.

And any of the keyed caps...you don't need a key to put them on. The flip-tab holds them closed, the key just keeps people from stealing your fuel.

Yes, a Blast cap fits a tuber perfectly.

I worry more about people putting things into the tank (sugar) than taking gasoline out. The late model caps will take any round key.

Lol, James you live in a retirement state! I doubt the younger demographic even knows about the sugar trick. Are you pissing someone off down there?

well i have no fear of other racers tampering with my bike, so a lock is not needed.

as to my cap - it broke long ago, the flip up tab would just spin and spin and spin, wouldnt open

The sugar+gas thing isn't true. Gas is not a solvent of sugar.
Plain old water is more effective at messing up someone's bike.
Maple syrup is the best. Bike smells like fresh pancakes just before stopping.

I just gave up with my old X1 cap and bought a new one. The problem I was having was the lock was buzzing around randomly from engine vibes.
It's a pretty crappy design, really.
I took it apart thinking that I could just put heavy grease or a new O-ring in there but it's just metal on metal with NO O-ring!
Once it gets loose, that's it.
Also, rain water could get in past the floppy loose thing.

The grease approach worked for a while but the gas washed it out finally. (Did I mention NO O-ring?)

Crappy design or not, I got well over 80K out of it and it looks cute so I just bought another.
If I knew about the Blast compatibility, I would have bought one of those instead.

Corn syrup is cheaper than maple. I have many neighbors in my 55-and-up community who would like to restore the no-motorcycles regulation; it was worse when I worked night shift. My cars are both air-cooled VWs, and my motorcycles are both pretty loud.

Still, no one has tried to vandalize me in the last twenty years - since I lived in Monterey Park and spent a lot of time cruising in Hollywood. The caution about vandals is one of those life-long habits.

In the sixties, you could get pulled over and given a haircut for "violating local moral sensibilities" and harassing bikers was considered as acceptable as driving drunk.

Hybrid, there was a thread a while back on fixing the cap. Someone made a bunch of repair kits and sold them to badwebbers.

Oh and that Newton gas cap link is cool as hell. Something to bookmark. Perhaps throw it in the Knowledge Vault?

Interesting that Newton was stumbled upon...

They were the OE supplier for Buell gas caps during the tube frame years, probably all the way back to the old company days.

Somewhere during the tube frame years they were cost reduced to a knockoff of the Newton cap made in Taiwan,

Brankin, that's interesting. One of my S2's has a regular key, the other the round key. My guess is the regular key version is the Newton model.
