I've been riding my thunderstorm-top-end S2 for a while now with the stock muffler on it. LOVE the quiet! But, I can tell it's loading up a bit. Still running "ok"...just not like I think it should. Used to have a Buell race muffler on it, and had it jetted 45/190 for it. Switched to an open-cap Supertrapp...same jets, ran like a scalded dog. Now with the stock can on it...like I said, I can feel it loading up and not quite having the ooomph it used to. Stock S2 (heavy flywheel) bottom end Thunderstorm pistons and heads, stock CR Stock X1 cams Buell "race" ignition for S1W (thunderstorm motor) Stock S2 intake Stock S2 carburetor (CV) Stock S2 exhaust. This is the first time I've run a stock tuber in...well....EVER. I just got my M2L back together and running like a champ, with full race exhaust, race hamcan...and 48/190 setup. S1W? Full race exhaust and hamcan...48/195 (hotter cams than the M2). But a "kinda-stock" S2? I'm at a loss and I'd rather not play musical jets for too terribly long... Thoughts? |

Well...my notes were wrong. It had a 45/200. ACK!! No WONDER it was loading up with the stock muffler!! Drilled out the cap on the idle screw (had to replace the carb a while back because of a cracked housing, never drilled it), set that for 2.5 turns out, left the 45, pulled the 200 and swapped in a 185. Down the 1/4 mile driveway and back...she felt strong. Ride to work tomorrow will tell. Exhaust smells proper, acceleration is good, idle is dead-on, choke works like it should...I may have lucked into a good setting |

I'm curious to hear how this works for you. I have the heads and plan to buy the other parts to set up my S2 exactly like you have. The one difference is the 1998 Thunderstorm exhaust purchased for mine. Yes, I know it won't clear the ham-can. I plan to make a new backing plate to skooch it up a bit to just clear the t-storm header. |

First impressions (ride to work) are good. Nice top end, good midrange, pulled strong to over 100 with clean power from 3000 rpm. 80-100 in fifth, no problems. No hiccups or stuttering. First and second gears at WFO I noticed a slight ping...I'll pull out some timing. I had it set aggressively and was probably drowning any detonation with that 200 main... |
