yesterday was the first hot day here in boston 93 degrees. so my bike when it gets hot pings a little from a stop. I have to rev up a little more than usual to stop the ping. so i was riding for about and 1hr mix of traffic and open road max cruise around 80mph.. around the 1hr mark while cruising around 80 my "check engine light" started to flash rapidly and i could not accelerate or it would break up and ping. so i pulled over and shut bike off for 10 min and turned bike on and the check engine light was not on anymore.. but still had my usual light ping from a stop (ie. start off from a red light). so i got to my final destination about 10min after "CEL rapid flash" episode. bike was shut off for 2hrs and on my way home of the same type of commute stop go and cruise my CEL started too flash while cruising and as i was pulling off hwy and slowing down the CEL stopped flashing.. Babied it home and shut her down for 6hrs and rode to work at 11pm. a 6mile commute and when i stopped at my first red light i had more pinging than usual and have to rev higgher for the pinging to go away. |

Almost sounds like the situation when the engine gets too hot. I believe the check light will flash at you and then it starts cutting the spark to cool the engine down. |

I'll see if I can help ya out a bit, I'm tied up but I'll get in touch with you. It certainly sounds like its going into skip spark mode. I remember then first time my S3 did it, it sounded like I'm was riding a single cylinder diesel thru Boston. |

Ignition timing incorrect causes overheating and pinging. Low fuel octane also causes pinging. Don't use ethanol fuel ever and try to stick to the one brand of fuel. TPS rest. NOTE :- (To prevent ECM EEPROM corruption, this operation should only be performed with a fully charged battery and ideally with the “Lights” fuse removed.) Checked your static timing . Run all the diagnostic tests. Set your AFV to 100% New spark plugs. |

it would be helpful if we could pull the codes of your bike first.if you can locate the plug for your ECM you can jump out the number one and number two pIn. when looking at the plug they are the two pans on the right hand side when the lock is on top.jump the two pins and then do as follows: to read the code. Turn the ignition switch on,the trouble code will begin with six flashes and then a 2 second pause.the light will flash to give you the first number of the trouble code. Followed by a2 second pause. The Light will then flash again to give you the second number in the trouble code.after that you'll get 6 flashes and then it will begin to give you the next code if there are more stored on your ECM. if you can get that I can at least get you the codes that is reading they may not be new they may be stored in history but I will give us some way to sTart. I'd be more them happy to hook up with you and run the laptop on your bike, but my work has me pretty wrapped up for a bit over the next week at least. |

This happened to me. First your going to want to change the fuel pump relay under your seat. There are two relays that are the exact same. The other connects to your starter. They are 6 bucks at the harley store. If that doesn't work it means your fuel pump is slowly going our. Ill bet my left nut that this is the problem. |

Easy way to check is switching the two relays around. If the bike has a hard time starting or doesn't want to star. Then the relay is bad. You will hear a cclicking from the little relay. If the bike starts ride it and see if the swapping the relays fixes fuel issue. |

X1 does not have a "Fuel Pump Relay" it is controlled by the ecm directly .. If you think that the pump is going south get a fuel pressure tester, and check the pump output, If you don't have a FSM try and get one. These bikes are simple but there is a load of MISinformation out there. FYI the two relays are the starter relay and the ignition relay. |

Two things to do 1.) absolutely make sure you have the correct heat range spark plugs in your bike. HD was/is notorious for giving too hot spark plugs to Buell owners! 2.) When you get new belt, adjust for "scary loose", that is, adjust so that when suspension is pre-loaded (you sitting on it or two-up) you can almost touch both sides of the swingarm (at the same time)with the belt between your thumb and fore finger. Once you get the basics sorted, these are great bikes. |

Squad: I second the plug thing, the HD plug IIRC is 10-R12 vs the too hot one 6-R12 IMO - experience The majic tuner should be bypassed / removed. The X1 Ecm may be trying to correct the "corrections" put in by that device. IMO a RACE ECM or Race ECM base Maps loaded and tested in your ECM are the best way to deal with this, BTW when idling you can monitor the map cells that are active on each map on line with spy and individually add or remove fuel as needed, MY X1 requires a tiny bit of throttle to start but once the chill is off of the engine it sits and ticks over like a sewing machine I agree that "gasahol" should be avoided if Possible, BUT the Owners manual will tell you its ok up to ?? 17% ?? not counting possible malfunctions, you have made 3 alterations to the machine, low restriction air inlet, low restriction outlet, and the "tuner" more air needs more fuel. The ECM will adjust the entire map to correct the fueling in one area, if the "box" is trying to fool the unit and not altering the O2 input The ecm will correct it, Usually with dismal results, Many of us have learned this lesson at our own expense,( ME) If I were closer I would be happy to help you with the spy trouble shooting thing. |

If all you need is to borrow an ecmspy cable let me know, I think I can locate one in my garage quickly and loan it to you. PM me if you need to borrow it. |

I have no direct experience with that specific FI "tuning" device but I would remove it before troubleshooting and tuning using ECMSpy. |
