Saturday I went to a bike show and rode just a bit. I was probably getting on it harder than I should (What else is a Buell for ) and I had a lot of noise coming from the case. I checked the primary chain and it was really slack and I could touch the inside of the case with it. With the adjuster almost as far up as it could possibly go it was in spec, but still a little noisy. Does this sound like a primary adjuster that failed? I know the 98's had the weak ones |

Sounds like it. Maybe you can get an inspection mirror and some light in and see. |

It needs to be replaced with the newer version. If it comes apart, it will be expensive. Be sure to adj. the chain to 3/4 in. on the tight spot. Too tight will cause several problems. This is NOT per the book. |

Thanks, just wanted to double check that I am on the right track. If it isn't the adjuster, I need a primary chain. I picked up a set of primary gaskets, shifter seal, and ordered an adjuster at the dealership this morning. The inspection mirror is a good idea, but at 30K miles, and the upcoming shifter transplant, I figure pulling the primary cover is worth the extra time. Besides, I have my sportster torn apart and sitting on my new lift at this time, so I'll be in practice when I get it done. |

If you adjust the primary chain by the FSM, it will be too tight and prematurely wear out the adjuster and the chain ... PRIMARY CHAIN ADJUSTMENT Class 101, just PM me for a copy ... |

Chain is probably fine. That aluminum primary cover and all the tranny lube machines nicely without much chain wear. It makes pretty glitter for your transmission oil as well. |

Oh, I don't think the primary chain adjuster failure would cause any chain stretch or damage, I just wonder if all the hard riding, wheelies and downshifting this bike has seen with prior owners and myself might have stretched the chain. My bet is that the chain is okay, but, it is about time to take a look. Just as soon as the sportster is rideable again and off the lift and I've made some adapters to hold the buell (that should be interesting) |

Jeff chains dont stretch they wear, depending on if how the adjuster fails yes it can damage the chain. its easy to access and inspect, and not bad to repair. |

I've made some adapters to hold the buell (that should be interesting) Unless you are doing some thing to the front or rear tire 2 tie straps. and 2 car stands work fine. The stands are to allow you to turn the rear wheel. |

If it is the adjuster, it's a very easy fix. Always err on the side of being a bit too loose in there after. |

I either hang the bike from an engine hoist and anchor it to the legs with tie down straps to keep it from swinging, or as I said I will be making adapters to use it with a high position lift. Haven't quite figured it out just yet, but I have enough going on that it can wait. My back is too jacked up to work at ground level and I don't have a lift table (yet) |

Just take the primary cover off, its easy, the plastic shoe that the chain rides on is crap, yeah it works great on a 40hp sportster, but these Buells can crank so the best thing g is to upgrade to the beefier shoe. I know from experience because I also had the adjuster break along with the shift pawl, really hard to keep it in gear. You might also want to check the shift pawl and make sure that the retainer clip didn't come off. |

If you adjust the PRIMARY CHAIN to 3/4 inch(not like the FSM says)on the "CHAIN TIGHT SPOT" you will not have any problems with the ADJUSTING SHOE(even with the early shoe) !!! |
