Does this look right? I don't remember the yellow/green stuff on there and the sensor itself (and the stuff) is spongy? Seems like it used to have more of a "solid" feeling. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v716/mikeftbl52/ 2013-05-12_08-49-50_444_zps318640cf.jpg A couple days ago my 99 m2 started to backfire/spit and sputter at low rpm/load, we are talking around 10 mph in 1st gear....didn't do it all the time and was fine above that range. Then, on my way home from work this morning it was running bad all over the entire rev range, felt like it was only on 1 cylinder for most of the ride, every now and then you could feel the power pickup and smooth out, but it wasn't consistent. The front cylinder's exhaust pipe was noticably cooler than the rear....the plugs looked good, albeit the front was a little darker than the rear. I haven't tested the coil yet with my multimeter but I did pull the plugs and thumbed the starter and had spark on both, although it wasn't a big fat spark. The coil wasn't warm to the touch. Any thoughts or input? |

Does it smell fried? It looks like it is on its way. I use a '98 M2 module and my Drag Specialties (XL) cam position sensor has been working fine for four years now. |

I think that is what they were like. But your symptoms do sound like they could be consistent with a bad crank position sensor. Its easy to spot if you can get s scope on it while it is running badly. |

What would I be looking for on the o-scope? |

Since hd wants $80 for just the sensor plate I am thinking about going with a dual fire dynatek s...ds6-1 Anyone have any experience? I have used the s on other bikes and loved it, just not an hd |

Your coil is dual-fire, right? Drag Specialties cam position sensor is forty bucks. Just say its a Sportster. |

"consistent with a bad crank position sensor." Did you mean Cam position sensor? Don't think Tubers have Crank (shaft) position sensors. |

They call it a cam position sensor but it is bolted to the crank. Tuber cams are hard to bolt anything to. |

It is not bolted to the crank. The rotor is on the end of a cam. It goes half as fast as the engine's crank. |

Yeah, sorry for the confusion. Harley calls it a cam position sensor, but to me it's a crank position sensor. |

Well, the aftermarket CPS didnt fix it and I even got a factory (used) cps from a friend that was known to be good, no dice on that one, either. I swapped to a new coil (even though the old one checked out fine on the multimeter), new plugs and new plug wires...still the same crappy running. I noticed that if I wiggle the wires coming out of the ignition brain box it does effect the running, not dramatically but it seems to do something. I think that I have a combination of bad internals in the brain box and the wiring going into it are not fully making up. Hell, I may have even crunched some wires last winter when I put the frame back on the engine after the topend rebuild. I decided to pull it all apart, dramatically simplify the wiring (as a lot of the stock stuff I am simply not using and won't be using with the addition of the dyna S) and install the S. So, now, I am waiting on a riveria advance unit for the S (funny thing, I had a points plate in a box, from when I converted my old fxr to EI many years ago, couldn't find the advance mechanism anywhere). So, maybe in a week or two I will be back in the wind (Message edited by cupcake mike on May 18, 2013) (Message edited by cupcake mike on May 18, 2013) |

Looks like I got her whipped... Anybody wanna know what it was???? Wait for it...... Spark plugs! I couldn't believe it! I had bought a couple sets of autolite's last spring, shortly after I got the bike. The ones that cross reference with the 10r12s...well, when it first started acting up, I threw in the backup set and when it didn't fix it, I jumped to ignition sensor/box being the problem. I stopped by the HD stealership tuesday morning after work, to grab a couple odds and ends and figured, I would give them $10 a plug for 10r12s(!!!!), just because. I had all my new ignition parts and wiring stuff laid out on the work bench ready to go to town (to the tune of a few hundred bucks). I threw in the new plugs for shits and giggles and I'll be damned if she didn't fire right up and purr. I have never had two sets of plugs in a row be bad...crazy stuff. Now, except for having to re-set the timing (gettin a little popping on decel), she is damn near back to brand new. Moral of the story....hell, I don't know. I am just happy to be back on the road. |
