I'm currently experiencing an issue with my bike. When I do any sort of quick acceleration, or prolonged freeway riding when I return to idle, I idle at about 2k RPM. I can easily back it down to 1k by leaving it in first and slowly releasing the clutch until I get back down to 1k.

I'm wondering if it's an ECM thing, or if it's a simple throttle cable.

Was just going to throw in a new throttle cable, but went to the HD Dealer today, and they told me it was $55... Seems high. Figured I'd check with you guys to see if you had any other suggestions, or knew where I could find an appropriately priced cable.

FYI,

A few years back I had to dump my x1 on a corner doing over 100. My cables were frayed on the throttle body side. The frayed cable wouldn't allow the throttle to return. It was a very bad day! It wouldv'e been a worse day if I wasn't in full gear. Took months to heal, and even longer to rebuild the bike.
Inspect those cables closely! Your life may depend on it! If you have to replace. buy NEW! Spend the $55.00! A funeral will cost a hell of a lot more.

If your cables look good, take a look at your throttle body. I've had the bushings wear out where the shaft goes through, and snap that shaft in half. That too will/can leave you with a wide open throttle. Not good! If the shaft snaps, it should (most likely) snap where the butterfly is held on to the shaft with 2 small screws, since thats the weakest point. Those screws can get sucked in the cylinders, again....NOT good.

If all that checks out, it may be a simple tps reset. Let us know what to find.

Assuming it's your S3T? It might be a frayed cable. Is the throttle smooth to roll open or does it feel a bit notchy? I had this issue with my S3T. One strand had frayed on the 'pull' cable. You can get inner cable from a bicycle shop & repair your own if you can do soldering. My cable cost less than $5 to repair. Don't forget to lube them. Have you checked for intake & exhaust leaks?

99 S3T, yeah.

Just trying to diagnose the issue, it's been going on for a while, but it's never been a problem, more an annoyance.

Completely smooth roll on the throttle. Just had the throttle spring recall done on it a month ago. Figured they'd mention if my cables were in need of replacing.

Checked for leaks, don't see any.

Is the bike injected?

Could be you have the idle set too high. On the Ulysses, if I have the TPS set even 50rpm too high, it "hangs up" when returning to idle like you're describing.

Check your intake seals and injector o-rings closely and make sure they don't leak. If injected, reset the TPS and check your AFV. It can tell you if you have a leaking intake manifold.

It's also possible the cable has worn a groove in the guide exiting the twist grip assembly. Happened to me in '01 with my '99.

That is a TPS reset problem. Reset it and it will go away! I had my bike tuned at sea-level and at this altitude 7200 ft it would not run for crap. Until i cranked up the idle screw to get it to run. Then it would hang up at around 2k and you could force it to idle lower by letting the clutch load up a little. The 99's were the first year the ST3 got FI.

Alright, I'll get a tps reset in right away. Haven't ever used the ecm cable I have, so this'll be fun.

Fuel injected, yes. My idle is almost exactly 1k.

Set the tps and idle when the motor is hot.
If the bike is running hot because of incorrect ignition timing it will hang when returning to idle.
Leaking injector seals will do it too.
Leaking exhaust flange will alter fuel mixture.
Cable could be rs.
Idle set to 900-1000 rpm max or it will hang.

I agree. My X1 idles happily at 950-ish.
The official factory idle is supposed to be 1200 for some reason.
Maximum vibrating plastic body parts+heat in traffic.

Remember to do the TPS reset with the bike at operating temperature.

the reason is insufficient oil flow at low idle. oil cools and lubricates.

I had noticed it idles higher when really hot. Was out diagnosing today, and I'm now certain it's not my throttle cable. As I left the bike running, stepped off to get the mail, and it went from 1k to 2k with me ten feet away. Really hot day today, mid-80s. I didn't enjoy it, but I noticed the RPMs hung a lot more today than most days.

Need my Laptop back, girlfriend borrowed it for school a few days ago, so not able to do anything ECM at the moment. When I do get it, any tips? Never used ECM Spy before, heck I'm not even sure where the plug is on the bike. Pretty sure it's right side under seat. Do I need to unplug anything, or is there a dedicated port for it?

I turned my idle down under 1k, and we'll see next time I ride if that helps out. She just doesn't sound happy at 900 RPM.

Alright, update. Nothing besides idle adjusted, and it seems to be working out great. Hit 90 degrees out today.

Problem is, it's real grumpy at start, lurching around, having what sounds like a tough time keeping going. Any way around this?

I have the exact problem and did a tps reset and idle adjust yesterday but problem persists. will check for exhaust and intake leak next.

roll the idle adjust up for the cold starts and adjust down once its warm.
