So my old S3 had a fidgety breather bolt, it liked to wiggle loose, and I'd have to tighten it every month, else it'd spray oil all over my fins. Checked it tonight by knocking the hose back and forth, and the top end of the bolt just sheared off. So I've got a hollow threaded area stuck in there, and am in need of a part I can't see to find. I need suggestions on getting that threading out, I'm just going to try a screw extractor, hopefully have one that'll work laying around. Unless anyone has a better suggestion? If anyone knows, a part number for a stock breather bolt for a 1999 S3T, I'd appreciate that too. Or if there's a better solution, let me know. | ||

best solution IMO, replace the rocker boxes with XB style, whch breath out the top, then replace both breather bolts with the supplied bolt and never deal with it again. the quick easy fix is just replace the breather bolt. Ive had good luck tracking old parts down through kutterHDonline, Anthony is very helpful and will take the time to locate old obsolete parts. I did the rockerbox conversion on my S1,one of the best mods I did to the bike, now I need to do it to my other two.... | ||

Depends on how far in the bolt broke off, but use of a properly sized screw extractor is your best bet. Be very careful not to push any metal shavings back into the head. You can hit any catalog that sells HD or aftermarket parts for the breather bolt used for an EVO motor. Use locktite Blue to keep them in and torque properly. Not a big job at all, just take your time. Good luck! | ||

Jolly, actually doing the XB Rockers here soon. Soon as they arrive actually. But my S3 is my only means of transport right now because my car's engine is being rebuilt. So I need a quick solution, and I'll end up paying for it as well as the conversion. Didn't realize the XB conversion would eliminate the need for this breather bolt. AmericanSportsBike's kit doesn't have anything to plug this hole. | ||

Appreciate that. Just didn't realize I'd be getting rid of them. Local Harley dealer doesn't have the bolt, so any temporary solution ideas? Doing the xb conversion soon as the parts arrive, but that's not till next Friday if I'm lucky. | ||

I can mail out a breather bolt tomorrow, but that would take a couple days to get to you. Wonder how much next day would cost, prolly as much as a shop cobbling something together for you, such as: Maybe a local machine shop can weld a post, or piece of a bolt for the flange to another bolt, then open up the middle of it for you? I've generally found good locally owned shops to be very helpful when I have a special fix needed, if their not too slammed with other projects. I could see buying two stainless bolts of the proper size, turning the threads off one, then welding it to the other. Might weld the two heads together (top to top) to make sure the post lines up properly. Maybe weld first, then turn down... | ||

Hmm, if you've got a spare, might take it. Be good just in case I've forgotten anything essential for the upgrade. I forget things too often for my own good. | ||

The HD shop will have some nice chrome button head allen bolts that look pretty clean too. They are some sort of big twin saddle bag mounting hardware or something of the sort. For a clean option of plugging the breather, rather than just a big hex bolt from the Ace Hardware or wherever. Anyway ride the bus to work Monday, and maybe Tues. If there aren't any close solutions I can have one of my left over breathers to the post office or Fed Ex for you this morning. With you being in WA, overnight will get the thing to you Tuesday coming from UT. | ||

Perhaps you could get a small piece of copper line that you can push into the broken off bolt hole and bend so that it directs any venting to the carb or a catch can? As to getting it out-just a thought, but get a reverse thread tap, tap it, thread in an appropriate bolt and it may pull the broken off hollow one out. The problem is you are going to be pushing some shavings into the head, no matter how careful you are about cleaning it up. (Message edited by Jeff73Mach1 on May 06, 2013) | ||

Yeah, right now I've got something I rigged up from Ace Hardware in there just pushing into the breather hose. It's keeping it from spraying on my leg, but it's leaking a little. Mark sent me a new bolt, and hopefully USPS willing it will be here tomorrow! Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I really appreciate it. And thanks to Mark for getting that part out so quick! | ||

That little breather area in the heads isn't really "In" the head's supply of oil. The only way anything can get "In" the oil is by first going up against gravity and then through the one way umbrella valves. This is why if you route a breather line upwards so that the goop goes back into the engine, it doesn't. In other words, a shaving or two will harm nothing in there and the shavings that do get into that hole are easily removed. | ||

for the bolt has any one considered drilling out a 1/2-13 nc bolt and cross drilling it use this until you get the right parts the threaded bolt body should not be too hard to remove.. Grease a tap to clean up the hole the grease holds the shavings. Like Nate said, its not likely you will get any thing in the motor | ||

The bolt was falling out on the guy...it won't be hard for him to remove. You can probably stick a wood pencil into the hole and turn, and it'll come right out. | ||

Excellent point Joe, funny how we all get to trouble shooting and forget the basics sometimes! Hopefully the bolt arrived yesterday John? Tracking is not showing anything yet. | ||

i got one out with a "WOOD SCREWDRIVER" like he said. i used a flat carpenters pencil i shaved down a little and lightly tapped in there til it was jammed in there real good... it unscrewed easily. use a little blue loctite after you get the new bolt. then change over to xb tops and never look back... | ||

Odd, thought I posted yesterday. Yeah, got a big screw extractor, and was able to turn it out by hand. Was harder to get my tool off the broken piece than remove it from the bike. Thanks again for the quick shipping Mike! New bolt is on until Friday when I do the conversion. Helps me get to work this week though, so I appreciate it. | ||
