I may have had some bad information from the pump folks on how the reg works in Part III- it may RESTRICT fuel flow, rather than VENT it. They deal with a lot of pumps for all sorts of applications, so maybe they thought I had another type, or perhaps I misunderstood him. Either way, the diagnosis, inspection an repair are the same. You don't need to know how it works to know you have a problem ! Parts I-III described the fuel SUPPLY side - upstream of the injectors. Read comments from others for any corrections or additions to those, and this post. And I reiterate the obvious - working with fuel systems is dangerous so take necessary steps to be in a ventilated area, with no source of ignition, and have fire extinguishers handy. I'm not a professional, but apparently I learned *enough* to fix my own fuel issues since my X1 was dead, and now runs better than it ever has- at least as far as the engine (I still have rear-suspension issues). I'm just sharing the experience here because I wish I'd had a tank-to-throttle-body description of all this when I started! Injectors are those (usually) black plastic components pushed into the throttle body. They connect at the top with *the fuel rail*. Injectors have 3 components packed into a tiny part- the filter, electronic control, and nozzle. On the inlet side is a filter. There are at least 2 upstream filters, so at least in-theory this filter should have little or nothing left TO filter! Which is a good thing because obviously it don't take much to clog a filter this small. That's failure-mechanism #1 on the delivery-side - a clogged filter. Next is the electronic control. There isn't much to see or diagnose here since its internal. With ECM SPY you can activate it and hear a tiny *click*. It could fail, or the signal to it could fail (TPS, etc). You can check the signal with a DVM and there are steps noted in the X1 service manual. And finally the nozzle end. Nozzles are specifically designed to aerate the air/fuel mixture in a specific pattern. When clogged or obstructed this pattern can get distorted which can result in poor performance, failure to start, poor fuel efficiency, etc. If you're sure you HAVE adequate fuel pressure on the rail, you can read in this forum and elsewhere about the spray-test. Basically the injectors are removed, pressurized, activated, and the spray pattern is observed. Its hard to actually evaluate the pattern by just seeing it spray; sending them to RC engineering will provide details if in doubt. Spraying fuel out into a garage is obviously hazardous so I recommend you try it outdoors, away from flame or spark, and spray into a safe container. So what if you have pressure and good spray pattern and it still won't run or runs badly? The only component is the throttle-body, and the only failure it can likely cause is air leakage into the cylinders. There are various seals and o-rings to check. If you send your injectors to RC engineering, they are returned with new o-rings. That concludes the fuel-system tour. I was intimidated with the system since my experience as an old-school biker was all carbs. But when you really get into the EFI systems- they are actually much simpler. Ever take apart a slide-carb? Springs, screws, and jets everywhere. An injector is much simpler and potentially does a better job mixing fuel and air. As always comments, advice, or corrections are welcome. I'm just sharing my last several weeks of getting the X-1 back on the road to recovery .... Oh and once it's running again, celebrate with your favourite beverage! Could you now explain to us why you felt the need to start TEN separate threads in the past 30 days on this identical subject? Any hope you may have had to enlighten somebody in the future has been completely lost by the fact that there are fragments of your dead sea scrolls scattered everywhere and will be lost to the archive in the next 30 days. |
