I figured with all the bad luck shocks I should pick up one of these before they were all gone. $300.00 sounds like a reasonable price to me. |

Save your money for a Works, Penske, or twin cycles. Although $300 isn't bad, I wouldn't spend that on a SHOWA (personally). My experience, the SHOWAs are poop. |

++ The Josh and and not rebuildable. Get the good shock and keep the old Showa as the spare. |

Too late, I already got this one. I got Three bikes I ride so this is not an everyday rider. But it is my favorite so far. I don't need a shock yet just got it because I wanted to have it for when I need it. Maybe someday I will get the high dollar shock but not likely. Thanks though maybe if I didn't have so many hobbies I could see spending that much cash for a good shock. |

The OEM shocks are crap, I had mine all set up, it blew seals every 8,000 miles. After several rebuilds I finally broke down and bought a Penske. Save a few more dollars and get a Penske or Ohlins. |

I think the Showa goes bad because dirt gets into the front body wiper. The wiper hardens, shrinks, and cracks allowing debris inside. |

They all fail faster than other applications because the front of the shock is directly bolted to the rubber mounted engine. I just had my pogo stick rebuilt for $340 so that new one at $300 sounds like a good deal to me. |

My original shock on my 2001 X1 lasted over 30000 miles and worked fine right up until it popped the seal when i hit a big pothole ........ never had any issues with how it handled right up to that point. |

I just recently bought one of these new $300 dollar shocks for my M2 but I bought the S3/S3T version for the heavier spring. I'm 190lbs. and this spring is better suited for me. You might not want to try it if your under 190lbs. though, I've got the pre-load near the lower limit. This shock should be better for two-up riding too. Great deal as far as I'm concerned and I can always rebuild or have my old one rebuilt for when I need it. |

i got the new stock $300 shock too, i got the M2L version & am very happy, made a good gain in feel 7 like how it handles. feels a lot better than the stock M2 shock i took off, also helped in Quarter mile got time down. it can be rebuilt here in Australia a guy has all the parts new to rebuild but not new main sharft. i broke the main sharft on my stock one. i'm going to fit a front rubber cover to protect the front dust cover from weather. if i bought a new shock that was aftermarket i'd only buy Ohlans but did not know they made them for the tubbers? |

If I had seen that I might have bought that one instead. I could have powder coated the spring yellow and the spring carriers black,How Sweet would that look on my yellow and black X1. But the one I got is brand new in the box. |

Damn I guess I should have asked if there was a heavier spring version, but the stock shock on mine seems ok.I try not to go down too many rough roads if I can help it. I wish I weighed 190 8-) |

Keep an eye on ebay for used works or penske shocks. They aren't plentiful but they do show up now and then. I picked up a works the other day for 300 off of there for my X1. The stock showa had no damping left after 39,000 miles. |

remember with any aftermarket shock it will require rebuilding more often than a standard unit, my penske has been done 3 times now, |

Gusm, what prompted the rebuilds of your penske? How many miles in between? |

penske are designed as race shocks and as such will be stripped and cleaned on a regular basis, totally different from road use, the problem seems to be there are is no cover or shroud fitted and dust, grit etc get onto and around the piston very quickly and unless you are prepared to maintain it often its gonna fail......I know I was that soldier, as for mileage, not enough |

Josh, shock's got roughly 20,000 miles on it & I don't baby it. It's been round various race tracks including Le Mans & the Isle of Man, I've ridden it over most of France & at the moment it's getting hammered round the Alps & the Jura whenever I get the time. Oh & I've already crashed & rebuilt the bike, with another frame & forks, but the shock is still good. Now I've typed that, the 'kin thing will probably blow in a couple of weeks time. Doh! |

Dang, my showa shock couldnt even make a quick jaunt to the gas station before it blew. Guess you got one of the shocks they made when quality control was paying attention. |

I could be wrong, but my experience with the Showa rear shock is that the piston shaft flexes when there is a lot of travel, trashing the seals. I think they last longer on shorter stroke setups. |

I got one of these shocks from Ebay but now I need the updated front shock mount as the stock shock is the longer version. Was this part of a recall or something? Will HD provide one free of charge for a bike that is so old? Wishful thinking I guess!!! Anyways, I'm on the prowl for the updated version for te shock mount. I see different versions and not confident that I'll get the right one and paying a decent price. Oh well, I'll keep pogoing until I get it resolved. |

I would say a decent price is around $25 for the mount. Just prowl ebay and ignore the stupidly priced ones. |

Thanks for the tips. Dealership checked all recalls/service bulletins, 6 recalls and work completed. None regarding the shock. Dealer says the part is obsolete and I need to call HD USA (I'm in Canada) But, it looked like the stock mount as the picture showed the "old" version of the shock. I did check the ebay listing but, the part number doesn't match with the service bulletin I pulled off this website. I don't want to pick up the same part I've already got on the bike and I'm a little gun shy with ebay after I thought I researched it out to make sure I got the right shock for my year and model. I might check with another dealer just to make sure and I'll do some more digging on the part number to make sure I get the right one. Thanks for the help. Great site. |

..."if you have not had the recall done to that bike bring it into Harley they will honor any recalls not done its the law" Speaking of the recall, I got a new shock when I took my bike in ('00 X1) for some minor repairs when I had just got it about 5 years ago. I dropped it off two days ago to get a pair of tires mounted and when I stopped by to pick it up the service guy said the shock recall was never done on the bike so they had replaced the shock under the recall. Looks like the had lost they paperwork. I guess sometimes it does pay to get the bike to the dealer for repairs. (Message edited by kalali on May 26, 2013) |
