Will XB9 rocker covers fit my '99 S3? I am venting too much oil and have no means of burning it through the air cleaner of my antique carburetor. Also, I have a new set of rings: can I install them with the engine in the frame by supporting the motor from below? I need to reduce the blow-by pressure before I change my crankshaft oil seal so I don't blow the new one out. I am venting too much oil mist from both breather hoses and it is making a mess of my frame and rear fender. |

The XB covers are a bolt on. I have them on my s2 and my s1. You remove your umbrella valves as they are not needed with the XB pcv valves. In my opinion the XB stuff is a pretty major improvement when it comes to crankcase breathing. steve |

So I need just the covers and not the entire rocker assemblies? |

Correct, your rocker assemblies will be fine. I am running the originals on both my tubers. You only run the top cover, not the top two. Remember to get the pcv valves for the XB and the rubber grommets the pcv valve slides into, that and the covers and you will be fine. The XB top gasket seems to be slightly different, but I have used both style with XB covers. They sometimes swell after exposure to oil so it is a good idea to change them at this time. |

Is there an automotive PCV that fits or just the XB one? |

ive done it on my S!, installed a catch can as well. the bike really breathes better, it sounds as if it runs better as well. easy swap. I even paid for the rocker box wrench instead of using a cut down hex key. tried that once..the wrench was easier to work with. bought mine off of amazon for about 40.00. ive got three buells and my buddy has 2, both of his need the mod and my other 2 do as well... so figured it was worth it. |

American Sport Bike sells a polished conversion kit. The stock XB covers are rough cast. Comes with everything you need. http://www.americansportbike.com/shoponline/ccp0-p rodshow/A20000.html |

Have some covers on order from fleabay; will get the proper gaskets to fit. Do I need to use the exact XB PCV valve or is there a generic low-cost option? I'm being laid off in two weeks and cost is a factor. |

PM Buellistic on that, he'd be the guy who knows on those PCV's. I have some grommets in my box o' parts and can measure those if you want to do a general search for the size online. Sorry 'bout your pending lay-off James. Polishing is easy to do yourself if you are on a budget and need something to do with your time... should you have that desire. I sprayed mine with the HD texture black and left the lower in the stock "polished" finish they came with. |

It's been a great 14 months with Lockheed Martin Missile Fire Control in Orlando - tough commute from Melbourne. They have an asinine policy regarding maximum duration of contract employment - my boss is happy with my work but can't keep me as a contractor and hasn't any permanent openings. I can polish the parts myself no problem - just want this damn mist to go away. Grommets I can afford at the stealership. Must get gaskets there anyhow. No way they are ever working on my bike again. |

I would imagine the pcv valves were originally sourced for something produced in larger volume and then used by Buell. If anyone knows of something that is carried at the local Auto store that fits, Id also love to know. Polishing the covers is a lot of work. They look great when you are done, but the price Al gets for the ready polished ones look cheap once you have been through it. steve |

I'm just going to wrinkle-black paint them: the rest of the motor is not polished. Anyone done this mod on a big twin? My 120 inch Keck has never run right from day one and Ray Keck has never cared that he sold me an expensive pile of crap. |

Elf, I did the wrinkle paint on a set for an S1 5 years ago, they still look great! |

Parts on order. The PCV valves are less than ten bucks each. |

Parts arrived. Covers go on with valves facing each other, umbrella valves come out, hoses gets T fitting to join them and then another T fitting to join with the stock breather hose, (which is already routed back to vent under seat at rear of fender)? Anything else I need to know? |

Installed parts - rear PCV valve sits so high the gas tank hits it. Anyone else have this happen? I had to loosen the front motor mount to get the rocker cover to clear the frame when I installed it. Yes, the motor mount is right-side up. |

When I did the conversion to my X-1, had some of the same. In my case, the front cover did not clear the front mount, but the clearance difference was small enough that a few swipes with a rattail file gave me what I needed. I took a big flat file to the top part of the rear PCV valve where I needed clearance and got some relief that way. Hope this helps, Dave |

Probably too late for you now, but I used two front covers on my S2 for tank clearance reasons...puts the rear valve at the rear of the rockerbox. |

That doesn't dunk it into the oil? |

There is no "dunk" on top (or anywhere in a dry sump motor actually), its all splash-lubed. I have mine teed together and going to the airbox like factory and no issues, puke, or drooling. Works great. |

I know it's splash lube, but I had thought there was a pool of oil on the low side of each head because of the pushrod tube location. If a front cover can work on the rear cylinder, there's no reason not to just switch them. That'll put both PCV valves low enough to clear the tank. Thanks, Rat! |

The only "pool" is down in the lower rockerbox tray (you can see it when you take the upper cover off; it might be a quarter of an ounce) and no, I haven't had any issues on my bike. The PCV valves don't project that far down from/through the grommet. |

The only issue with putting the rear cover on the front cylinder was that pesky clearance thing; I had to unbolt the front motor mount, drop the motor 1/4", and wiggle the rocker cover into place with the PCV valve in place. It clears the frame by about 2mm when torqued in. The PCV valve on the rear still hits the tank, but not nearly as bad as when it was on the front of the cylinder. Shall test ride after I clean up a bit. Sounds good, looks good. Thanks again. |
