I'm wondering about some tranny noise when shifting. About 3-5 times since the bike was new, when I change between 2nd and 3rd and set the gear quickly/improperly I hear the sound of gear teeth touching/spinning-like the gear didnt engage- and the bike is then out of gear. I pull in the clutch and try to set the gear again. After this has happened a few times there is a noticeable difference between the gear changes between 2-3- feels softer between gears. What could this be? Is this a chink in the tranny's armor or is it possible I have I done some damage? I also have never checked or changed the tranny fluid since buying the bike about a year ago which I will do before the weather breaks. Will a different tranny oil quiet down the tranny and or smooth it out? (Message edited by wesleyb82 on February 18, 2013) |

I wouldn't experiment with any oils other than the H-D stuff. Is your clutch adjusted right? When my clutch cable was about to pop, it was down to three strands which made the clutch not pull as much as it should have. Other causes of shifting issues I have had were due to the shifter pivot getting gummed up and messing with my travel. Failing to find anything after checking the easy stuff.... You going to have to look in there. There is a detent plate on the end of the shift drum that is held on by the power of imagination and a crappy "E" clip. Mine hasn't failed but it's pretty common I guess. Beyond that, you'll have to yank the whole cluster out and look it over. 9 times out of 10 it's an easy thing though. |

Great advice. Check your clutch cable and adjustment of the clutch Synthetic fluids make everything shift smoother and quieter to me Make sure your primary chain is adjusted correctly Make sure your belt is adjusted correctly Get the upgraded shifter if you havent (greatly improves shifting quality) |

I just replaced my transmission. My forks and 2nd gear were damaged. I found a good used one and installed it. I polished my shift drum, but also did the following. Modified the shifter detent arm, bored out the original hole and made a new shoulder bolt. The stock detent arm has around .015 slop and is very loose. Cut off the tip and tapped the center pin that holds the detent plate, got rid of the sloppy c-clip. Made a new shifter with a closer fulcrum point to allow more accurate and less force to shift gears. My transmission shifts smooth as silk, but still clunks a bit. This is because of the Harley style gears. |
