I am wanting to anodize the gas cap on my S3 and would like to know if anybody has removed the key lock from the gas cap. I have a spare cap to practice on. The retention nut for the lock is slotted on each side and is aligned with a slot in the aluminum part of the cap. Does this unscrew from the aluminum?
Any help will be appreciated.
Steve

As I recall, it's just pressed in.
There aren't tumblers or anything like a real lock in there.
I took mine apart because the vibes are rotating it all over the place when I'm riding.
I failed to solve my issue.
They are still available from dealers so I will probably just get a new one.

Just get a blast cap. Same cap, same fit...no lock.

Thanks for the info. I used a brass drift punch and supported the bottom of the cap while tapping the lock out the cap. The brass or bronze cylinder unit has 2 tiny o-rings that are located midway up the cylinder. The cap has a small notch machined into the sides of the hole and the unit is staked in one of the holes to help retain the cylinder. When I reassembled the cylinder back into the anodized cap, it went in with enough force that I didn't have to re-stake the hole. The pin that holes the aluminum tab to the shaft is splined at one end and can be easily disassembled if you look first to see a slightly bigger end than drift the pin out this end. My black anodized cap and spill plate looks good with the charcoal paint job.
