Why would the previous owner block off the tranny vent? Should I unblock it?  | ||

If I had to guess I would say the crank seal was/is bad, and was puking oil out of the trans vent. So it was plugged to prevent the oil leak. I would unplug it asap, and if it starts to puke oil replace the crank seal. Mike | ||

If it pukes while riding it can kill you, other than the seal if you put in too much it will come out and pour over the rear tire as you go into a turn, at least it did for me. | ||

It seems to be rather low. Mine sucked rain water and then puked yellow foam until I re-routed and lengthened it. It needs to be open to the atmosphere. If you have a catch can, route it there. | ||

+1 on it can kill you when it pukes while riding. When mine went and i installed a bigger clear fuel filter to catch the extra oil in case so i would have some time to react. Not so much, It filled the little filter up after about 10 minutes at 80 mph. lucky i ran out of gas just as the crank seal went horribly wrong i was on the highway going straight. But i started sliding all over just engine braking. Very dangerous indeed and talk about a mess to clean up! Lucky i was heading to the BUBS land speed races in UT and a guy in a toy hauler saved me of the side of the road. (Message edited by preybird1 on January 26, 2013) | ||

Running to the catch can is a temporary fix. When that seal starts going, it will fill the can pretty quick. | ||

thanks for the feedback guys. I cut the hose to open it up and the tube was dry. took it out for a local slow ride to test and warm u the tranny to change fluid and it remains dry. I will get a catch can for it though and check often. Any recommendations for a catch can? Do you guys route both the crank & tranny to a single can? Draining the fluid now. I have 1 quart off syn3 & 1 of formula+. Any preference? | ||

American Sport Bike or 5-ODRO for a can. You can route both to the same can. Formula+ is what I use for the gears. | ||

"i" run H-D SYN3 because when the crank shaft oil seal goes bad just where do you think the oil in the transmission will go ??? | ||

My S1 uses a larger clear size spice bottle 2oz? I customized the lid with 3 brass nipples threading to an aluminum plate on the inside of the cap. the XB rockers merge upstream and flow into one nipple. the tranny vent gets another nipple. the third nipple leads to the breather under the tail light. The catch can hangs near the oil line stack near the battery and stays in place with an oversize slip fit zip loc wrapped around the oil lines. | ||

Gee Gosh Golly, Pull the plug or cut it off and see what happens first before you rebuild the engine and tranny. To many try to second guess things. Lets get the facts first. PLEASE. Mine is still stock and I am not going to change a thing. If you want put a 90 deg. pvc and aim it out to the side. | ||

Take is easy Bert,lol and thanks for your concern. I'm taking small steps and have cut the plug out, it crumbled in my hands. It hose was very dry when I inspected it and was dry after a short ride. I think adding a catch can to eliminate getting oil on the rear tire is a smart idea. Don't want to replace the seal if i don't have to. | ||

What makes your motor sprocket seal go bad prematurely is running the primary chain TOO TIGHT !!! The FSM is wrong as the measurement should be 3/4 inch on the chain tight spot !!! | ||

Should the end of the hose up near the tail be pointing up or down? Or does it matter? Mines a plain open tube right now, nothing much ever seems to come out. | ||

Chain being tight is a problem for sure, but my bike has over 35,000 miles, and is now 12 years old. That single lip rubber seal was crumbling when I removed mine. I thought it was just me that Bert was over reacting a bit. It was a late post, how many beers were you in Bert?  | ||

You say the plug crumbled in your hands? Quite possibly a mud wasp had plugged the breather. I have run into sevral instances of this at my shop over the years. This can cause much confusion while troublshoting, especially when the critters plug up carb vent hoses. | ||

Bgbrd, you could be quite right, good point. I had a few I cleared out on the inside of the barrells. I noticed them as I was doing the XB rocker cover conversion and had the carb off to do a good cleaning and add air/idle adjustment upgrades. We get them a lot in Florida in the garages. I was riding my other bikes more frequent, could be the blockage! Ride the Buell more !!! | ||

Good call, Bgbrd. I had spiders take up residence and plug my carb-bowl vent. That took some trouble shooting! | ||
