Anybody have the torque specs, or installation instructions for the Buell carbon fiber ham can cover? I don't want my new (by way of RSM688) carbon fiber cover flying off the bike because I torqued the bolts wrong or didn't use loctite, etc. Thx in advance Kilroy | ||

I use loctite 262, red. Just a drop on all the bolts and do them up firm... | ||

I can't imagine they would call for red loctite on these 2 fasteners | ||

262 is for fasteners in the 3/4" range, mostly chassis/engine. Use 243 ( no-prime blue ) on anything 1/4" and up, and keep the new purple 222 around for carbs, instruments, controls, etc. Another good thing about thread locking is the barrier it creates to keep moisture out of your fasteners and limits corrosion. Kilroy, I just snugged them down (don't tighten too much and break the black plastic spacer. They were just as tight when I removed it as when I installed it. -spencer- | ||

True Loctite brand Loctite blue is very weak. Permabond blue is much stronger yet still temporary. Whereas Loctite and Permabond red - both 'permanent' - are pretty similar. I use Permabond blue and I'm sure that in the past I used Loctite blue - until the night I got home missing my carbon air cleaner cover, trim plate and filter. Luckily I just retraced my steps the next morning and found everything - minus one screw... 1313 | ||

Regardless of the comparative strength, the reason I don't use Loctite brand Blue is because it comes in a RED tube! Always confuses my near-sighted mechanic.  (Message edited by jayvee on January 11, 2013) |
