to make a long story short, my thunderbolt tiped over. It cracket the breather box.. I fixed it. Ok now the stumper.. I was leaving work the other day and noticed a good size puddle of oil under the bike. I checked the leavel and it seemed fine for the ride home so I drove it.. I pull into the drive and its leaking like a sive. I take the oil resivore off and clean the bike up and reasemble everything.. I just started it up and all of a sudden the oil cap pops out, like it was under a lot of preasure..It seems like the oil is not cycling.. Whats up with my bike??? This is an 02 with 5200 miles on it.. I dont think I should be having these kind of problums.. Could it be a oil pump? |

Are you sure it is engine oil and not transmission oil? Where is it showing up? If the bike tips over while running you can fill the transmission breather hose and it will puke out. Running while tipped over can also leave excess engine oil in the rockerbox which will come out through the umbrella valve breather at the top on the right side. If you have an unmodified airbox the engine oil will show up dripping off your air filter. Did you add oil before the cap popped off? Overfilling the oil can cause the cap to pop off when you start the bike. I think if the oil pump was not working you would have no pressure at the oil tank and if the drive gear in the pump crapped out you would know it from the noise as the metal bits went through your engine. There is no reason for the tipover to have broken your oil pump. |

Sounds like you overfilled after an oil change. 2.5 quarts with standard filter is what these bikes like. If the dipstick popped out, it more than likely means overfill. |

If the oil pressure warning light is functioning properly, and Did Not come on during the ride, the oil pump is OK. Sounds like a classic case of the oil tank being overfilled. Were it me, I'd start and run the bike w/the oil cap off, letting it idle far a while and monitor the oil level. And check the fluid level in the primary. If it is way high, you may have a crank seal issue. |

I never changed the oil. It has royal purple in it so its got plenty of time left on it. I just drained it in to a jug. The dip sticl was showing the oil at the middle mark on the stick. I was told thats a good place for the oil leavel. I can keep the oil cap off when I let her run and I can see the oil start to rise to the top of the resavore. I turn it off right befor it starts to over flow. Im positive that its not trans oil. Its the black resivore under the seat.. |

If you run with the oil cap off, oil will be puking out the opening. How do I know... that? Regarding the primary/engine seal failing, that would overfill your primary for sure. (Message edited by two_seasons on November 22, 2012) |

Easy check. Drain primary oil. Your primary takes about 28 ounces to get it up to the bottom of the clutch adjust, bike level of course.. If more than that, there is your problem (Message edited by two_seasons on November 22, 2012) |

Always warm bike before checking oil, its a dry sump , oil sits in the crank case then is pumped to the tank, if it shows half cold it may overflow. I usually run mine just showing on the dipstick. |

Ok fellas< I just drained all the oil out. Without taking the oil filter or plug out. I just drained the resivore.. It had 3 qts it just the ress.. So.. The guy who changed the oil dint know what he was doing, second How could I have been driving this so long and it only happen now? I let it idle and no more over flow.. It seems to have fived the prob.. Cross the fingers. I think Im gonna do a compleat oil filter change this weekend. Now I dont trust what the other guy said.. So with new filter, how much oil? |

If the oil level was at the 1/2 mark cold, that's the problem - too much oil. "I turn it off before it starts to overflow" - if the oil level is correct, it won't overflow. Try draining 1/2 qt into a clean container, and try again. Oil level should be about 1/2 way up the stick when warm. About the primary - if the crank seal is leaking, engine oil will leak into the primary, overfilling it and blowing the excess out the primary breather tube, causing the kind of mess you describe. Since the oil cap popped, I'm going with the 'too much oil in the oil tank' as the problem. |

Gosh, I really need to learn to type faster. LOL If the oil doesn't have many miles of service, and was drained into a clean container, no sense wasting it. Put 2 qts in, and run around the block a time or two and check you oil level. Adjust as necessary to get to the middle of the dipstick when warm. |
