So have been have a little bit of a leak on my 01 X1 lately and i want to take care of it over the winter. After i go for a ride for about an hour or so when im done i have a little oil spray on the seat sub frame.i also have a little bit on the vertical tube support on the frame. Then on the cooling fins of the front cylinder there is a good amount collecting. what gasket would this be? the cylinder head? is this common? any input would help. thanks. |

Some here say changing your gaskets yourself is a tuber right of passage. |

I always like to start simple. If you have the stock airbox and crankcase ventilation system, pull the airbox cover off and look for oil in the airbox. Your umbrella valves p/n 26856-89 have probably gotten tired. If that is the problem, XB rocker covers are a nice solution. Hope this helps, Dave |

i dont have the stock airbox. so that might not be the problem. rocker box gasket sounds pretty solid. is there any good places to buy one? online or just go to dreadful H-D? |

Al and Joanne at American Sport Bike is always a good choice. Any independent shop will/should have them; just be sure to ask for the ones that fit an '01 Sportster. That way you don't get the "Buell ??" look. |

haha ok. is there any tutorials or tricks on how to install them? seems like at the very least you have to remove the tank. do you have to drop the motor as well? |

You need a service manual. Not a difficult job by any means, but you do need the manual for this, and future projects. |

Yes, you have to remove the tank. No, you don't have to drop the motor. Yes, get a service manual. And a parts manual is handy. See Al and Joanne ... |

Hey guys, thanks for all the help. And THANK YOU to Kc zombie for the manual. thats such a huge help. anyway the bike is away for the winter so its time to get all the work done to her. before i order the rocker box gaskets i wanna make sure i am getting the right thing here. http://www.americansportbike.com/shoponline/ccp0-p rodshow/5935.html it is #5937 correct? |

Well, it gets rid of the middle section of the rocker boxes, and I believe the XB boxes have a superior umbrella valve design, or maybe eliminates the umbrella valves entirely (I haven't done it myself yet, but many here have done it) |

Having done the XB conversion: It does eliminate the middle section, and gets rid of the umbrella valves. The XB boxes use auto-style PCV valves. Simple, almost bolt-on conversion. I had to notch the front cover a very small amount, to provide clearance for the front motor mount. 5 mins w/a round file, and done. The only real work is routing hoses from the PCV valves. I ran mine down the right frame tube to the ground; for a self-lubricating sidestand pivot. Folks more PC than I mount catch cans, probably a better choice. Hope this helps, Dave |
