I am sorry to report that my newly restored Buell and I were taken out by an SUV on Saturday afternoon. I came away with only a broken foot, some strains and scrapes and a badly bruised back. I am pretty sure I am a poster-child for wearing quality riding gear.

I am afraid that my S2 was totaled. I will know for sure in a couple of days but it took the hit right behind my knee and went down hard.

I bought the bike new in 1995, serial number 48. I am pretty bummed about losing it even as I am grateful to be alive and not in an ICU somewhere.

Be careful out there, okay?}

Glad your ok Bill. Sorry to here about the bike, hope your luck is better than mine with the insurance adjusters. Wife's Honda CRV was totaled and we only got about 2/3's of what it was worth. Heal fast.

Glad you're able to post about it. The S2 is rare...but you're more so. Take care, and heed the docs : )

Bend over and assume the position, I'll go out on a limb and predict $1500. No offense to you or your bike, just to insurance companies.

If they low ball you on the value, make them get you another 1995 S2 in the same condition yours was in prior to the accident. They have to make you whole. Talk to your state's insurance commissioner if necessary.

Thanks all for the kind words. I am doing okay and have two followup doc appointments tomorrow to deal with the broken foot, etc. I will let you all know how it goes with the insurance adjuster.

As suspected, the insurance company is declaring my motorcycle a total loss. I haven't gotten the number from them; I will on Monday. I don't expect it to reflect the value or rarity of the bike but maybe I will be surprised.

Health-wise, I am slowly getting better. I am definitely a poster-child for good helmets and riding gear, not to mention good fortune.

I am going to put up a separate post asking for pointers to S2s for sale. I will probably need the ammo.

FYI !!!!!

If & when they total the bike... negotiate your highest price first & than offer to buy it back from them!!!! they would rather sell it back to you for pennies on the dollar rather than pay storage, transport, & wait for it to auction!!!

Progressive totaled a 20K BMW HP2. gave me 18k & I purchased it back for $1200 (again neg this $$ too) after a little tlc from me & $150 at dealer to install & reset throttle sensor I was back on the road : )
Salvage title but i will never sell it.

Good luck & heal fast!!

I did the same with my Uly. At first I thought I got an believable deal. After chasing down all the issues, I'm still happy I did it, but I'd classify it as a "fair" deal.

I spent a bunch of time fixing a bunch of stuff, only to find out 6 months later I had cracked the mounts on the rear head.

And you will end up with salvage title, so if it gets wrecked again (not at fault) you will get very little for it, and if you go to sell it you may be in for a headache.

So again, not to say don't do it, but when you are talking price, don't be shy about diving WAY down to the bottom. There is a reason salvage bikes are cheap.

Thanks for the tips... I should know on Monday what they will give me for the bike. The guy who did the damage assessment told me that the salvage value was $160. We will see if they stick to that, but I am inclined to keep the bike if I can.
