I had checked my primary chain slack a couple of thousand miles ago and it was at the forum recommended value of 3/4" at the tightest spot. Today I took a peek inside the inspection hole and saw deep grooves looking up inside the cover. The chain is cutting into the the lip shaped protrusion. I got the bike with 9K miles and it was adjusted by the dealer shortly after when they replaced the starter gasket. It hasn't been touched since and now has 21K miles. I'm not sure how long those grooves been there and hoping it happened before I got the bike. Does a loose chain cause the grooves? Should I adjust it to the FSM 1/2"? |

3/4 will not hit your cover and in case you missed the tight spot. 3/4 adj. is a plus. |

Yes the grooves are made by the chain and a little looser than the FSM is good. The chain gets tighter as it heats up and pulling the bearing in the clutch hub apart and tearing up the shoe are not good. If your not seeing the grey powder in the primary oil or hearing strange noises when you decelerate with the clutch engaged than your proly ok. Run the bike until its at normal operating temp and then pull the inspection cover and take the spark plugs out. Support the rear wheel and turn the motor over with the rear wheel. This way you know for sure. |

Thanks for the feedback. I think the PO must have had too loose. No unusual noises and no grey matter in oil or on the drain plug. |
