Hey everybody. I've got my X1 apart for a top end and decided to check the oil pump gear while I am in it. Here is a picture of what I have. I see some wear on one side, but it doesn't look extensive. Is this gear bad? I've got about 35K miles on it. Also, if anybody knows of anything else that should be checked, please tell.
Thanks
William

Meh, if the top end is off, you are only a gasket and oil seal away, and it's not really going to cost any more down time, so I would replace it anyway. Peace of mind/bulletproofing kind of thing.

But that's just me. And my gear looked fine when I replaced it.

I would replace that
IMO that is not fine you are no where near failure but you have significant wear.

YMMV

Change it. Always best to hedge your bets against future failure.

Exactly what Oldog said. If you have a week long road trip coming up tomorrow and don't have parts on hand, order the parts and take the trip and replace it later. Or maybe even wait for winter. But don't run it for another year like that.

Make sure you check a few positions well. If that's the "bad" side pictured, you are fine. If that's the "good" side, the bad side may be just about gone.

The good news is that if you got 35k with that one and only that much wear, you will never have to do the job again, particularly withe the new improved replacement gear.

Alright guys, looks like I will go ahead and change it while I have it apart. As far as parts required go, I will need a new gear, of course, a cam cover gasket and somebody mentioned a seal. Which seal is it and is there anything else?
Thanks
William

I was thinking CPS seal. Not necessary if working carefully, but why not. When I did mine, I didn't pull the lifters; just left them in place. And didn't pull the CPS, just loosened the things I needed to and let the gearcase cover hang (safety wire) while in there.

The crankshaft locking tool from American Sport Bike that locks the pinion gear is worth using. Makes the job simple. Not necessary if the primary cover is off. And I pulled the cams right away and put them on the bench to avoid possible damage from falling out of the gearcase.

Hope this helps, Dave

Make sure you get the fancy bronze "racing" one. Mine was down to razor sharp blades when it was changed out. Scary stuff.

Oil pump gasket as well. And you will need to remove at least one rocker box, so you need at least one gasket for that as well, and might want to replace both.

Crank seal is a common failure, but is in a whole different area than you will be working....
