I am beginning to assemble my new motor. I will have a Hammer Performance: 1250 kit, 30deg reverse dome pistons, crush cnc port work, 30 deg squish band, big valves, and crush 600 cams. My motor was all stock before. My question is, How do I ensure that I will have safe AFR’s for my first startup, and subsequent heat cycles for the break-in period? My thoughts were to go ahead and just increase the fuel tables across the board before the first fire up, would that be ok? |

add say 20% across the board, check the plugs as you go what are reverse dome pistons? |

If it were me, I would have it professionally tuned on a dyno. That's too much of an investment to use a trial & error method of tuning. |

the reverse dome pistons are 30 degree domed to match up with the 30deg squish band that i had machined into the heads, but are then dished above that to keep the compression ratio to a safe level. you can read about them here: http://xlforum.net/vbportal/forums/showthread.php? threadid=1517452 i do plan to have it professionally tuned, however i need to get past the initial heat cycles before that can be done... those first few startups is what i am worried about. |

i need to get past the initial heat cycles before that can be done... you wont be running the engine that long so if it runs ok your likley good ( Assuming you heat cycle the engine like i did mine ) } |

agree with OldDog When I did mine it was pretty much half a dozen warm ups and then some light 'stress' of riding around for about a mile or so Then I took it to the dyno and the tuner took it easy at first, again, just for precaution. I was on stock tune, but my motor was milder than you - pretty stock minus cams (different stuff inside, but same comp ratio, just S&S rods and wiseco pistons) Wouldnt really run on stock tune, would idle fine, but under load didnt work well You'll be fine. |
