I was on a trip, had some oil leaks then several thousand miles later some noise(top end) and the tiers were gone so I had it shipped back to myself. Along the way I have been told different things by several different shops. 1st(Half Evil in Wyoming)told me I need an oil pump(not sure about) 2nd (Buell-Harley in Camarillo) told me Possible rocker Piston Slap Primary Gasket Inspection Gasket Breathers Cam cover gasket starter leak air filter Piston Rings Piston Pin Rocker Gasket Clutch plates(ran dry briefly) My oil tank returns and bolt holes also have leaks, which I thought was the source of the oil. I want to know what you guys think is a good idea to do, also does anyone know how interchangeable this stuff is? My plan was to take the engine apart and see if it looks bad and fix what needs to be done and put it back with new gaskets. |

oh, dear. Where to start on this. You say you had an oil leak, then "several thousand miles later" you had some top end noise. Did all the oil leak out - were you running dry? Do you wait several thousand miles to check your oil level? Much Less change the oil? We need a little more detail to help you with the engine noise. As far as the repairs, both of the dealers could be right, or neither could be right. It sounds like the HD stealership wants to replace any item that has ever leaked on a sportster motor, and then some. Which might not be a bad idea if you are still running the original gaskets, and you have unlimited funds. If not, you need to do some detective work to try to pinpoint the leaks, fix what is leaking, and prioritize the other replacements. All the factory gaskets will eventually leak on these, as they are POSs. The new gaskets are far superior. Nothing on these motors is difficult to replace, you just need some time and a service manual. Post up some more info and somebody here will be able to give you some help - |
