Hello, I'm finally getting around to working on the S2 from a few years ago (between jobs, limited time and case, but working again so able to start working on the bike again): http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/406 2/590856.html?1283387576#POST1904859 New battery in bike, ran all tests from thread in link and everything passed. Looking at page 7-25 in the manual for Regulator Bleed Test and using a digital multimeter instead of a test light I get voltage on one of the pins. Is that good or bad? Gotta run an errand, back shortly.... |

(sitting in car waiting on indirect grandkid's event bus) I put the multimeter on what I think is the equivalent of a test light buzzer, unplugged the regulator to stator connector, then tested one pin thru the probe and other probe to ground and it was silent. But when I tested the second connector pin the meter buzzed. I switched to dc voltage with the bike key turned off and got a reading of something above 20+, other pin read nothing. So does this mean the regulator is shot, or am I testing it correctly (if I explained things well enough). I'm more mechanical than electrical so as long as I don't get zapped and don't see sparks or smoke then I'm not entirely sure what is right or wrong. I did start the bike and did the AC voltage test per the older thread and got something around 50-ish. The ohm readings were good if I did it correctly. I also removed the regulator screws and cleaned off the grounding faces and star washers. When it was off and dangling by the wires I noticed that the potting compound on the rear of the regulator had some cracking in the compound which could have let moisture in there. Looked dry, but then it has been sitting in the garage for two years or so. I guess I need to price a regulator tomorrow and maybe get one when my next payday gets here. Since it is the same regulator on all the tubers, you might re-post up one level in the general Old School forum for a better chance at answers. I can't answer your question without sitting and reading through the manual and figuring it all out. Electrical=magic most of the time for me. |

Mike great to see you posting again! The charging systems on the old tubers are pretty stone simple. You are getting 50ish volts AC off the stator, that is a good thing. If you plug in the regulator to the stator and don't get 14+ (but less than 14.5) volts at the battery when running, you have pretty much nailed it. It's the VR.. lots easier to deal with than the stator.. Brad |
