I have a 98 s1 and a want to put a swing arm from 99-02 on it. What sort of modifications, if any, will I need to make to fit it on? I have a longer axle to accommodate the larger width, and will get the proper belt tensioner.

There are no tensioners on the tubers. You need the corresponding swingarm mount for the 99-02 swingarm, axle adjusters, axle, and might as well change your isolators while in there. I think that is all, I am sure someone will chime in if I missed anything...

Spacers too I think. Possibly the rear brake caliper and mount?

I did this swap a long time ago. Needed nothing except the swingarm. I was told it wouldn't fit with the passenger peg mounts, mine were gone way before that. I hear others say you need, axle, mount block, caliper mount, and spacers but none was needed. I guess ignorance is bliss because I got the arm and adjusters and bolted it on.

Swing arm mount from the s1 should work , s1 axle is longer.

hows the project, Im right behind you on the plan, its next on my list.

1998 S1W:
1) Do I need to remove the passenger frame loops?
2) does the stock length shock still fit?
3) I have a nice carbon fiber rear hugger, will it still bolt up/is the geomet\ry the same or do I now need to buy a hugger for an x1?
4) any step by step instructions for any tricks to minimize the "DOH" moments?
I have heard some grinding needs to be done to allow full compression when bolted on an S1, what needs to be ground? (any photos?)
5) special tools to get the preload set right, have looked in the manual and they show a tensiometer of sorts to measure swingarm force when pulling up?

its my 2nd to last mod, ...I never actually make it to the "last" mod....

the other one currently in the works is a custom top bar clamp that will mate to the 1 1/8 adapter blocks for the cradle style bars. its taking a while but I want to convert over to 1 1/8 so that I can run ducati monster bars...

Thanks!

You do not have to remove the frame loops
The stock shock will fit
The rear hugger probably wont fit
There is no grinding needed get new isolators you will need the matching swing arm mount block axle and tensioners lift the bike up of the old lube the isolators use a flat putty knife and lower the frame over the block an oh and put the isolators on the frame first not tge block
