Hi, I have a '96 S2 and I'm having some issues with my clutch. I was about 20 minutes into a ride, and I noticed that my clutch came out of adjustment. I had so much free play in the lever that the cable was almost loose from the lever. Shortly after that, I started hearing a funny rattling/grinding/scratching noise every time I pulled the clutch in. The bike shifted and ran just fine, so I turned it around and came home. I adjusted the clutch cable back to it's original position, and I'm still getting that grinding noise, but I only hear it when I pull in the clutch. Does anyone have any idea what may be making this noise? Do I need a new clutch, and is it a job that someone with moderate mechanic skills can get done? Any input on this would be very helpful. Good chance it is the outer clutch bearing. Pull the derby cover and remove the ramp and adjuster and you should be able to see if there is a problem there. Fix is dismantling the clutch and installing a new bearing. I had this happen, and took the opportunity to install a Energy One clutch. Kit came with the clutch compressor and the new spring gives me clutch handle pull equal to a 2002 S3, much easier to use in traffic and the clutch is much more positive. Anyway, your symptoms match what I had. And if you are comfortable removing the primary cover it is a fairly easy job. Shane | ||

I just went to my local HD dealer and bought the bearing for a '94 Sportster. You might need a new retaining ring also. And also a good time to upgrade the chain tensioner, and starter gasket if needed. All those parts are standard Sportster parts and have been upgraded. | ||

No it does not come with the throw out bearing that has gone bad. Also the spring they are supplying you with is much stronger than needed and your hand will get tired quickly. Just purchase the Harley#8885 bearing and you should be good to go approximately $11.00 | ||

Ed- I have that spring and it requires so little effort I can clutch with two fingers. I don't know how they are able to make a stronger spring that requires less effort, but there it is. It was a huge decrease in effort from the stock spring and I didn't change the cable so I know it was the spring. I used the energy one clutch with the 15% stronger spring, I would highly recommend it. | ||

That is good to know all of the stronger springs I have been in contact with pull much harder at the lever so I just add plates when removing the riveted plate and use the stock spring. Works very well |
