I recently finished off my 99 s3t (V&H exhaust) with a buell carbon race filter, K&N element and American Sport Bike tall velocity stack. I rerouted the breather, uploaded the race program and removed the California emissions. The bike runs strong and I am very happy with the result. I did these mods thinking it would increase the efficiency of the motor allowing the bike to run smoother and cooler at lower RPM thus longer engine life. I did notice a drop in mileage from 50 to 44 MPG. I am reading on this site that many are going back to stock in order to preserve engine life. I don't race the bike but do enjoy an adrenaline rush now and then. I live in the hot desert climate of southern utah and ride the bike daily. I also plan on doing some touring this summer so my question is RACE or STOCK? Thanks |

has your mileage gone down with that 'adrenaline rush now and then'? |

LOL, this bike is only driven to the store for groceries by a little old man. I did however run an honest tank full of good behavior driving to get that number. |

I've had the race module, pro intake and a D&D on mine for 51,000 of the 57,000 miles on the bike. Get about 45mpg and as high as 55mpg just cruising. No real problems except a broken motor mount stud. |

Is this carbureted or Fuel Injection? Sorry, M2 rider here... Could be running rich at your cruising rpm? |

99 would be F.I. |

I am not really concerned about fuel economy and love the bike either way. I am just wondering where the motor is happiest,is stock the sweetspot or does it prefer more fuel and air. I know ebr did a good job stock but they also designed the race filter and map which I interpret to mean "the way it should be". My bike has 15k so it's really just broken in (I just don't want it broken down). If I knew these engines better I could probably answer my own question. Any thoughts or experience is welcome. Thanks |

The race program allows increased rpm which wears things out faster, also,if your not careful, these extra rpm will blow out your front seal and fill your primary case with oil. So long as you only putt to the store for groceries and don't twist the accelerator too fast, things will be ok. |

The race program also allows the engine to run a bit more rich to enhance power. My X1 has run a race ECU since I bought it "new". It has well over 80,000 miles now. The rest of the bike is more rough than the engine. Mostly what it really needs now is a rear shock and lots of gaskets. LEAKING pretty much everywhere now Anyways, don't worry about the wikked crazy racin' ECU burning up the engine. It's the modern day equivalent of a jet kit. |

Thank you guys for the input, that is exactly the type of information I was looking for. Sounds like the rev limiter is really the issue if abused. Does anyone know if I can lower the rev limiter closer to stock using ecm spy. Sounds like that would give me the best of both worlds and help avoid unnecessary or accidental wear and tear. |

If you're going to use ecmspy (yes you can adjust the rev limits) do some datalogging & create your own fuel maps. I found the race map to be pretty lean in the low to mid rpms -didnt make power until over 4k. Now it's strong from just over 2k right through to redline. Kris |

Wouldn't it be more easy to just not rev it so much? BTW, I still don't hesitate to dance past 6000 on occasion. These engines are really pretty solid. I wouldn't sustain 7000RPM for any real amount of time but romping on it up to 6+K shouldn't do anything bad assuming it's got oil of the correct weight. |

Natexlh1000, It occurred to me after my last post that a little self control is the easiest way to go as you suggested. It is nice to have that little extra on occasion and I really if ever hit 6500. Case Closed. I am staying with the race set up. Thanks guys for all your help and suggestions. |
