My M2 recently blew my penske shock, when I originally replaced stock with penske I had to use old style shock mount which I believed to be 14 inches, I recently bought a used shock and mount which are both supposed to be 16 inches. I just removed old shock mount and the one I just bought looks to be exactly the same! Would a 00 m2 have a 14 in shock to begin with? Both shocks appear to be same length, not def for sure though, any suggestions? Ill post some pics in a few! |

Aren't you going to have the Penske rebuilt? Those are made to be rebuilt. |

LOL. All you need to do is measure the eye to eye distance, if they both match, then they're the same and would use the same mount, that is, if you have the correct one for that length mounted. BTW, you'd know if you had the wrong shock mount. |

Which shock did you buy? See pictures at this link: http://www.badweatherbikers.com/cgibin/discus/show .cgi?tpc=47623&post=2233599#POST2233599 The 00 model year should have been delivered with the 16.5" (1st recall). Then if the recall was performed before you got your Penske you should have already had the 14.7" (2nd recall) shock that also required a bracket change so the 14.7" bracket would already be on there. |

I bought the second pic (in link provided) but both penske and stock shock measure 16.5, I just didn't understand because I had to use old mount for the penske to fit, granted I have put 50k on penske and my memory is not what it used to be! Lol! New/used shock looks to mount up straight but was worried if I did have wrong mount it would bind up under pressure! |

I now have shock installed but am not sure on pre load eye to eye adjustment. The manual says 15.2, is that correct? |

Ok, since I am the only one home I decided to try to get shock at correct distance, I adjusted preload off bike then lay tape measure down and hop on bike to compare. problem, I moved shock all the way forward til it bottomed out and still around 16 and change, Am I missing something??? |

Sorry mick, you say you had the second shock in the picture, the instructions I just provided a link for are for the third one in the picture. |

Yes, they are in the Factory Service Manual. Since you are running the original non-recall shock for the 2000 model year the Service Manual values are correct. Section 1.14, pg. 1-33. Rear shock: With rider seated on motorcycle, the preload is determined by measuring the distance between the centers of the front and rear shock eye and adjusting until the measurement is within specification. Optimum preload measurement: M2 models: 17 - 17.4 in. (434-442mm) *All measurements must be taken with rider seated on motorcycle. *Riders with passenger at or near GVWR may exceed optimum preload adjustment. Also keep in mind that this shock was recalled because of a couple of instances where the rear shock attachment arm broke. If this were to happen to you, you'd have a rear tire up you seat and would no doubt lose control. I'm sure you know that and you said you were just going to use this shock while you send in the other one for rebuild. Good luck with it. (Message edited by jim2 on July 05, 2012) |

If a magnet will stick to the eye let there will be no problem, "BUT" if the magnet does not stick, DO NOT RIDE THE BIKE BECAUSE IT WILL BREAK !!! |

Although Cyclonemike has already seemed to have acknowledged the risk of using his original shock... A magnet will not stick to the rear eyelet of the either the early (suspect in some applications) Showa shock or the late Showa (desirable) shock - but will stick to the front eyelet of both. |
