I measured the head temperatures yesterday after a 30 minute highway ride, using a high quality heat temp gun pointed right at the flat portion of the head next to the head bolt. Ambient temp = 82F Rear head temp = 350F Front head temp = 322F I assume nothing surprising but just wanted to share. (Just got the temp gun and measuring anything that moves...nice toy) |

What controls your head temperature is the TIMING(must be correct), JETTING(too lean or too rich[runs cooler], "BUT" if too rich it will foul the plugs), and SETTING in trafic(no air moving across the cooling fins) !!! |

I was also curious to hear if those numbers looked reasonable or not. I assumed the head temperature tracks oil temperature closely at steady state and ~175C is right around where it should be. |

I don't know what the head temp should be, but you can expect the overall oil temp to be somewhat lower than the highest head temp you're reading. Keeping the heads cooler is always a good thing though. |

You measured the head temp after the ride, so no airflow at the time of measurement. Is it possible to measure it during the ride? ("Safely"?!) Thinking the temp might jump when the airflow stops... |

I measured it within a minute after I turned the bike off- grabbed the temp gun from the shelf even before I took my helmet off. Next time I will point the gun at the oil surface just to see if the reading tracks the head temp. Doing it while riding is going to be a little dicey... |

GOOGLE HEAD TEMPERATURE GAGES ... Put one on each head, go for a ride and get the real world readings ... For a BASE READING for your engine the TIMING must be correct, FUEL MIXTURE must be correct, the INTAKE SEALS must be good, the SPARK PLUGS must be correct, and the EXHAUST GASKETS must be good !!! |
