I got tired of the blistering so I made my own out of carbon fiber and epoxy then painted and clear coated it with the decal under the clear coat like the original. No more problems!

S1, If you know someone who is handy with fiberglassing or composites he should be able to make it. Basically I used the original tank as the mold, laid the carbon fiber over it using epoxy as the binder and then finished it off with auto body filler and paint. You don't want to use standard polyester resin as it shrinks with time. |

S1, You could probably use fiberglass cloth as long as you use epoxy as the binder. I used carbon fiber in a "twill" weave as it follows the contours of the tank better and with just 2 layers it's very stiff and about .025" thick! The 1st cover I made I did use fiberglass and polyester resin and the final product looked pretty good. However, within a year it shrunk and started riding up on the tank. Also when you fill these tanks with gas they expand which exaggerates the problem. When I did the carbon fiber cover I filled the tank with water before doing the lay-up. The cover fits so good it almost doesn't need retention but I did add 3 small velcro straps, 1 in the rear, which is covered by the front of the seat, and 2 in the front to the frame tubes which you have to look for to see them. I used a product called AeroPoxy as the epoxy binder. (Message edited by someday on June 26, 2012) |

This will be my winter project! I will use fiberglass weave but with epoxy and fill the tank first. If i can make a mold i would gladly make multiple shells and people can do the finish work. |
