So it was a leaker and I pulled it apart. 1st F up was not paying attention to the size of the bolts holding the rocker to the head. There are 2 different sizes and the manual does not tell you where they go. 2nd is did know I was going to need a special torque adapter for the right rear bolt due to the low clearance with the frame. Soooo does anyone have any experience with this and should I just order the tool from SnapOn? Also WTF do I do with the bolt issue? | ||

Bolt issue...pull the other box. Or, analyze it. Long bolts typically go where there's more load; shorter bolts go with less load. Do you have a shop manual? It might (I don't have mine handy, it's in the garage and it's late) specify bolt size for each position. Torque specs...it's a rockerbox, not a crankshaft bearing. Do the others first so your hand "learns" how much to torque...and do the right rear last. If it leaks later...give it a 1/4 turn.  | ||

Look carefully at the FSM, in the reassembly instructions there is a picture of the lower rocker cover and a corresponding chart of which bolts go where and their torque values. I assume you are confused where to put the 2 1/2 or 2 3/4 hex heads, the page im refering to has that info | ||

I highly recommend replacing most or all of those bolts when you change the gaskets, I just changed all of mine and had a bolt break at about 5-6 foot pounds, I took all of them down to Tacoma screw,( not sure where you live) and replaced all of them with grade 8 bolts it was super easy and I did the front and rear for 15 bucks. The drill bit and easy out aren't a big deal but better safe than sorry because it is easy to screw up if one does break. I cut off an Allen and put it in a socket and tighten that hard to get to bolt until I felt like it was tight enough, the rest I did with a torque wrench You absolutely should invest in a service manual it's well worth it. When you reinstall your bolts make sure you tighten them all at the same time and stagger one turn at a time in a cross pattern, like lug nuts on a rim you have to put the one hard to get to bolt into the rocker cover before you put it back on because of the clearance issue. Any more questions let me know, once you have done it you will feel like you can do anything on your bike. Great bonding experience lol | ||
