Crazy question.. figured I'd ask here. Old School has proven to be a group of knowledgeable and experienced riders! I've seen a lot of experienced mx riders say they run a weak premix in their 4t bikes to lube the valves. I tried it in the DRZ and love the results. The mix was around 120:1 - I think I'll go about 250:1 next time, but even the 120 mix shows no signs of smoking, just a crisper throttle response (probably the well-lubed slide moving quicker on the CV carb), and just a faint sweet sweet smell of 2 stroke oil at stop lights Anyone ever tried this as a preventive maintenance practice to keep the top end in good running order? Maybe in a carbed Tuber? Any long term negative effects? Obviously, I wouldn't try this in any FI vehicle.. can't imagine O2 sensors lasting long when exposed to the oil. Only using high quality oil as well. Right now I've got less than a quart of Amsoil Sabre left from when I rode my Zuma scooter all the time, will be replenishing with Amsoil Interceptor which is specifically designed for no carbon buildup in powervalve applications. Sorry, topic should read "weak premix in a 4 stroke?" My phone likes to switch around the text entry blocks. Mod, feel free to change topic title. |

How do your plugs look? |

The only thing I would worry about is the oil lowering the effective octane rating of the gas. If you don't hear pinging, then.... you win! I have long used the premix tank for starting long-dead engines because I was afraid of displacing the oil on the cylinder walls. |

People have been doing this for a long time. There are products marketed specifically for this purpose. Marvel Mystery Oil comes to mind as one. As long as you're running a very dilute ratio and it's not causing excess carbon build-up in the combustion chambers I don't suppose it'll hurt anything. Then again, I've never seen any empirical evidence that it does anything either... I'm not even sure exactly what it's supposed to be lubricating. |

I use full synthetic 2-stroke oil at 1 ounce per gallon of gas for a 125/1 ratio. I became a believer in the effectiveness of 2-stroke oil when I raced Yamaha RD 350s. Valve guides and pistons will run cooler and longer due to reduced friction. Regarding concerns about diluting the gasoline and causing a leaner mixture: One ounce of oil is only 8 tenths of one percent (.008) of total fuel volume. If the air/fuel ratio is 12/1, the effect of .008 is very small indeed. 1/12 = .0833 .0833 X .008 = .000666 of total air/fuel mixture In other words, don't worry about it. I will always use a bit of synthetic 2-stroke oil in my 4-stroke bikes. |

And if you use Klotz, it makes the bikes smell faster! I run dilluted old premix through the mower. The smell brings back nice memories of past rides, but makes me want to wheelie the snapper. |

Never pulled the plug on this bike, no reason to. I've only owned it for 3 months / 1500 miles. And I'm pretty sure I'd have to pull the tank off to do it. No big deal, just not something I want to do without a good reason. I've got about 120 miles with the premix, runs great. Starts fine as long I use the button, it got a little harder to kick over, though lol. Guessing the oil is holding compression better than straight gas, because I could barely kick start it before, now I don't think it would ever happen without the bike being warm. |
