So, just started 2 weeks ago and its happened enough times for me to fashion a pattern of sorts. The bike starts and runs fine (aside from being terribly cold-blooded but thats happened since we got it) but if I turn it off and run into the store for 15 minutes or so, it won't start when I come back out and sounds/smells flooded. It'll start 45 mins-an hour and a half after though. It also starts right up if I take it to work and leave it for 4-8 hours. Its just if I leave it for <an hour. Tried turning the petcock off while its sitting, no effect. Tried starting it wide open throttle, but it still won't grab. I was theorizing that the float might have been running heavy and seeping fuel into the chamber, but from what I understand harley runs vacuum fuel lines, and turning the petcock off should have stopped any fuel from leaking. I only had 1 successful hot start and it was when I popped the choke out a bit right after I turned the bike off, then popped it back in a couple seconds later. It started when i came out of the store, but honestly it could have been a fluke, i'm not sure what effect that could have had, if any. Bike is stock except for a few cosmetic changes. In any case, any help is appreciated. |

Nothing comes to mind for me and I probably should even be post on this but I would check a couple of things I list below just because if it were me I'd have to start somewhere. But the extra info might help someone who has more experience than I to help you. How do your plugs look? (may indicate flooding condition) What rpm do you usually set the idle at? (if it's very low I think it will make a hot start more difficult) Is your air filter clean? (I think a severely clogged filter starving the engine of intake air will have same effect as flooding from too much gas) I think there is an overflow line out of the carb, is it dripping when you say you smell gas? You should always turn off the petcock when you stop anywhere. |

Fuel vent ??? The vent can cause pressure as well as vacuum depending on the circumstance |

Turn the gas off when you stop and turn it back on when you want to restart !!! |
