Can anyone give me a bit of a side-by-side comparison on these three models? Anything in particular to be aware of/weary of buying any of these used (late 90s models)? Wanting to/needing to graduate from my Blast, but still want something a little out of the ordinary. Thanks |

X1 is fuel injected and has the removable frame segment to make belt replacement very easy. M2 has sportster cams but the other two have hotter cams. If you get something from the late 90's, be wary of low mileage. These engines don't wear out in a hurry. Regular use is better than neglect. |

What would you consider low mileage? The S1 I found has 12K and the M2 just over 8K. |

What do you want the bike for? If you're planning on long rides, the S1 may not be what you want. Its seat is illegal under the new anti-torture legislation making its way through congress. |

..Hootowl...you mean those things that resemble seats that ARE a brick inside of them? |

yeah... research is turing up a LOT of comments regarding the S1 seat! does the single vs. 2-up seat make much of a difference? bike in question has the 2up tail/seat. i'm also a skinnier guy too, used to riding bicycles, so having a minimal seat is not much new. admittedly, majority of miles are spent commuting, so the more mature, realistic side is leaning towards the M2. which i understand is a fantastic bike regardless. but the S1 just has a sexy factor to it that i can't ignore! it is a white lightning model to boot. |

Those are not called seats, they are called thongs. Low mileage is a relative term of course. If you leave a vehicle alone, seals dry out, carb orifices clog up with "mung"... you know. It seems like these bikes need a bit of an initial shake down to get them settled in. Most of my issues on my X1 were in the first year/20,000 miles. 12K and 8K aren't crazy low. I wouldn't be freaked out by that alone. Bear in mind that the oil change interval is supposed to be every 5000 miles. How old is the oil in those bikes? Be sure to check their oil for black sludge of death just in case the previous owners were froot-loops that NEVER changed the oil! |

If it's a short commute, go for the S1. Heck, get them both. Tubers are cheap |

It all depends on the individual of course. I wanted an S1 back in the 90's but couldn't see having one as an "only bike". Years later (just a couple of weeks ago actually) I bought my S1! Seats are subjective and while the S1 seat isn't what I'd call comfortable by any means, it really isn't all that bad. Much better than what I had expected after seeing them all those years ago. I'm a skinny dude with no natural ass padding and the seat doesn't bother me at all for the first hour to hour and a half. I just stopped by REI this past Fri. and picked up a pair of compression (bicycle) shorts with the gel crap in the seat/crotch area. They do help and I rode a couple hundred miles this past Sat. No big deal. Of course I do have a tough ass and have ridden bikes with worse seats for years. KTM LC4 for example... Sure, there are bikes with better seats but there is just something about the S1 that just couldn't be matched in the raw sex dept. For me at least, and I was willing to sacrifice comfort since I had other, more comfortable bikes already. But, with that said, and with my style of riding, I still couldn't see having an S1 as my only bike. But, if I want to do a 400, 500, 600 mile day, or a string of those back to back, then I'll take my GS. I still may spring for a Corbin for the S1 but the jury's still out on that and I plan to ride it for a while before spending the $$$. YMMV of course. |

I've got almost 20,000 miles on the S1 with the Pro Series seat, when I used to ride it regularly it didn't bother me at all, but it takes getting used to each time I ride now, since it is not currently seeing regular use. I've owned a handfull of street bikes and thought the S1 was the funnest to ride at least for my riding style. |

+1 on what Rex said. M2 is an all purpose street bike. The Corbin is an all day seat, although it's heavy. |

I have a 99 X1, and this season is my first with it. I've dealt with most of the common X1 issues. Shock, primary chain adjuster, etc. I'm in love with this bike. I got rid of the ugly side covers, and it's just the best looking bike. Long live the tubers! |

I love the M2 seat. It's not quite a H-D sundowner, but quite comfortable. I have more of a problem with the heat coming up between my legs from the oil bag, and wish the seat was thicker for that reason. |

The M2 accessory seat - I forget what they called it, I don't think it was "Pro Series" but it has the Pegasus on it - ROCKS. I never had an issue with the stocker on my '99, but I have the Pegasus seat on my '01 now and boy...it's damn near as comfy as my Ulysses! My S1W has the stock "Euro" solo seat - "solo" meaning, of course, "one cheek at a time". Still, not that bad (and I'm another lanky bastard with no natural padding). I have a Corbin for that...and it might as well be a 2x6. The Corbin on my S2? Awesome. Now for the OP...I think the M2 will be the most natural progression from a Blast. TONS of torque, not a ton of top end, comfy seat, "normal" forks, very predictable handling and overall behavior. The S1 is the hooligan of the bunch. I love mine...and I love that its not my only bike. X1 is kinda in between - decent seat, good cams, early DDFI fuel injection so it can snort once in a while, good torque, top end like the S1, USD forks. If you're looking for a "driver"? M2. If you end up wanting more handling and performance, you can swap in X1 cams and some USD forks down the road. |

+1 on the low mileage old tubers warning. Bought a '00 M2 last December with 3400. Replaced the intake gaskets already, now replacing high end gaskets. Be cautious of old rubber too. Old tires don't grip. |

The best Buell is to have both an S3T with a Corbin seat and an M2 with a Buell Select seat. |
