Hey, Maybe someone has had this problem before ... My S1 feels like it's running out of gas, then will just conk out ... then from the side of the road I pump the throttle LOTS and it will start back up, run fine for 10 miles or so, then sputter and "run out of gas". I don't know if I got a bad tank of gas or if there is something else going on ... Any ideas? Thanks a ton! - Bud |

Is there a rush of air when you remove the gas cap? Check the gas tank vent...might be kinked. |

I just put a small tank on -- and vent tube is now a little "short" -- and it is slightly kinked. That could "shut it down"? Wow, I'll unkink it ... that'd be a very nice solution! Thanks for the tip! - Bud |

Bud...happens to me all the time on my S1W. It actually happened again last night (about 50 miles from home at 10:00pm). My vent tube isn't kinked but I vapor lock at least 1x per week. |

Hey Lake Bueller, I plan on taking a decent ride today, and I was just gonna pull the vent tube off for the ride, and see if it just runs. What else can you do about vapor lock? Thanks. - Bud |

I run my vent tube dirtbike style...terminating under the lower triple tree. Never had a problem with it since. |

I was having a problem that I just got fixed, but it sounds like a weird fix. My S1WL was having problems just off idle, sounding like a stumble. It had been unused so I assumed carb problems. Took it to indy dealer (Tri City Motorsports) and their diagnoses was my "Intake Main Seals" were old, cracked, and not providing a good seal, allowing more air in for a poor mix. However after replacing these, they rejetted saying that the carb was running (cant remember if too lean or rich). I'll try and ride it tommorow and see how it's acting now. I guess I'm happy if it runs fine now, it's just that the reason sounded a little weak to me. They said it's a common Sportster engine problem. True? Overload in Colorado |

I pulled my vent tube off the top of the tank ... and ran 45 miles without any problem. Hope it was just the kinked gas tank vent ... but so far so good! Thanks Rick A and everyone else! - Bud |

Overload....I just had the intake seals replaced on my '98 S1W. The tech said they looked like they came off an old John Deere tractor. Now my '98 S3T is stilling looking like a million bucks. Go figure. |

Intake seals on these bikes should be a routine maintenance item as the heat takes a toll on them and they are toast in 20-30,000 miles. |

Rode the bike to work today, and she's running beautifully: very smooth, no coughing and spitting on deceleration, and no off idle sputter. It's idleing a bit high, so I may adjust it down to about 900rpm from the current 1000rpm. Firemanjim: I only have 3000 miles on my Buell. The seals did feel dry and hard. Overload in Colorado |
