For the life of me I can not get the race header in place. Its like one of those puzzles that just end up pissing you off. I am sure after typing this and getting a beverage it will probably fall into place... but right now I dont see how to get it in position without removing the front shock mount or the cam cover. I have searched and its sounds easier than I am making it. Suggestions? |

Funny but I started installing mine today as well. I removed the front shock bolt and dropped the shock to allow the header to swing into place. I'm still struggling to get everything lined up and the flanges started... Had to leave it for today as I ran out of time. |

Hahaha... I am sure you would. I feel like I am missing something simple here. It is a replica of a race header. Possible it has some slight differences. The collector was a little out of round making me think it got dropped during shipping. Maybe the collector is slightly out of place. I wont be able to tell that until its mounted tho! Grumble grumble... hmmf. I like working on my bike even when it stumps me. Challenging right? |

If the first "beverage" doesn't work.....try another, if that doesn't get a six pack and call another Bueller. |

Aaaahhhh... So you DID have to drop the shock? I was able to flex the collector enough to pop it past the shock but then the rear pipe is bound up between the frame and cam cover. I thought I had read some where you could just snake it through without removing anything. |

I hear ya Charlie... I am almost to the drink, stare and think stage. Then start removing parts as needed for clearance in the AM. (Message edited by nwrider on May 13, 2012) |

EXHAUST INSTALLATION Class 101, just PM me for a copy ... |

I've installed race headers on new and old-frame tubers (both S bend and T-shaped headers), and never had to drop a shock mount. Think "rubik's cube". It can be done, but requires some analysis and careful thought. And, don't forget tape...tape up your frame where the header may rub during installation. Nothing worse than finally getting a stubborn piece installed, only to find you nicked a neighboring part during the install. |

Thanks guys.. gonna give her another go. I read a post saying to remove my VR? I have not come close to it being in the way... But... Again.. its not on yet. Hehe |

IIRC, I had to turn the collector up in the air to get the rear cylinder port through the frame, then rotate the header back down into a normal-ish position for the rest of the installation, on the M2 (same T-shaped header). I honestly don't ever recall having to remove anything other than the muffler and muffler bracket, to install a tuber race header...but if you find something that makes it easier for you, just remember where it came from when it comes time to put it back! |

"It can be done, but requires some analysis and careful thought." Well that is the couple things I was missing! Dropping the front of the shock made getting it sort of in place easy. Now I just have to get header to "seat" in the new exhaust gaskets enough to get the nuts started on the studs. When time is short, things always take longer! |

Well... progress has been made... but I did not think things through as well as I should have. Think I have caught up to you Outdoors! Definitely easier by removing the "y" hanger and voltage regulator and its bracket. When I removed the long bolt that goes through the case I found out the hard way that the forward shock mount shares that bolt and can pivot on the other mount bolt. The result was my bike dropping a couple inches and startling the hell outa me. (supported by swing arm) Question: Can some one show me a photo of how the Y hanger mounts to a race shoe and race shoe to pipe. I bought some material to make a mount had it mocked up on the exhaust prior to installing it and the clamp is no where near the Y hanger. The Y hangar hangs above where the two pipes go into the collector?!? I was under the impression the race shoe was held on by the same clamp that clamps the muffler inlet to the collector. If that is the case it would be no where near the Y hanger. Photos would be greatly appreciated so I can figure something out. Thanks guys! Oh and I had a thought. Tossing out the Y hanger and making a ridged mount down to the exhaust seems easier than a "shoe". I know the rubbers probably there for a reason but... are they? If every thing was rock solid would I just be asking for cracks. Any one tried this? (Message edited by nwrider on May 13, 2012) |

This makes me happy...
This makes me scratch my head and reach for an icy cold beverage...
Does this appear to be in the correct position? I am seriously thinking about designing a new mount that omits the Y hanger. Even if it requires rubber bushings. |

Man, I think that collector is wrong. Anyone have a picture of a "real" race header's collector? |
Nwrider

The "real" race headers collector is one piece from the two pipes to the outlet. Basically need a trumpet shaped piece of tubing to make it exact. This was made out of three pieces but the outlet should finish in the correct location. Correct length and what not. |

I would think the best solution is a hanger welded to the collector so you can run the bushing in between the tabs on the hanger like stock. |

I do believe that may be the easiest solution. I think I have been just been paranoid due to reading about cracked collectors and shoes. Got some coin invested hate to break stuff ya know? |

I hear you. The holes on the shoe should be elongated vertically & larger than needed in diameter to allow for variances. Then, when it's tightened down, everything can be where it should. I'm a bit surprised it didn't come like that to begin with... |

Something similar was on his first proto-type but I believe there were some issues with it. I requested no mount as I wanted to make my own version of the shoe. I must say tho, the quality of this header is quite nice. Speaking of which.. I still don't understand how the shoe mounted. Was it clamped to the collector with its own clamp? Going to try searching for photos again. |

Who made that header? Here's the real thing, done in blue by Jet Hot.

http://clbres.servhome.org/dl_buell/82000-99Y.pdf This shows the earlier header hanger but the race header works with the later Y-hanger as is shown on my X1W. (Message edited by SteveFord on May 13, 2012) |

Ahhhhh... it does clamp to the collector. Got it mounted kinda ghetto fashion for now.. just had to hear it and maybe run around the block... sounds.. uhhh... healthy!!! |

Wow.. little burps down low but damn.. a very noticeable difference above 4k. Surprisingly quieter than my previous exhaust. Thanks for the photos and the install guide. Took longer than anticipated but I am smiling. |

So I found out why it was giving me such grief... It does appear that it was damaged when shipped... Box was crunched and the collector was oblong.. had to make it round again. I noticed my muffler is rubbing on my shock! I recall reading the muffler and shock do not run perfectly parallel but how much of a gap should there be between the muffler and shock up front? I am going to have to figure out how to bend my header a bit without damaging it! (Message edited by nwrider on June 06, 2012) |

Even Buell Race headers had issues with consistent fitment. On my S3 the clamp from the shoe ends up about 1 3/4" back from the weld, and about 4' ahead of the tail end on the collector tube. The Y Bracket development came after a good percentage of the race headers had been sold. Fitting an earlier race header to a Y bracket is a challenge - but worth it because once they're set up properly - they will last. Regardless of what fitment issues you're having - try to use the Y bracket. |

Got a Y hanger. Header is a reproduction race header. **** Can anyone tell me how close their race muffler is to their shock? I have some bending and twisting to do. Thanks! |

I have a Works Performance shock but it's pretty damned tight up at the front of the cannister - I can't slide my pinky in the gap. There is some clearance, though. |

Thats more than I have.. I noticed mine is very close to the case as well. But it has been rubbing on my shock. I will just bend it far enough to get a pinky through! Thanks! Now to figure out a safe way to bend the header out. |
