Have you checked whether it's doing it only under power while riding, or also while running and rolling (clutch disengaged)? The bearings on the primary output are prone to letting go when stressed too much by running your drive belt too tight. Raise the back end, if you hear your clattering when you spin the back wheel while in neutral, regardless of the engine running you will have found it. Suggest flipping your passenger pegs over in their brackets and lever it up on safety stands if you haven't got a bike specific rear wheel lift. How many miles on your M2? Any idea if the clutch has been replaced or had the spring plate removed? It's possible something is going on in the clutch pack too. -Mike |

He said right side. Cams and pushrods. And oil pump. Check 'em all. Add some Marvel Mystery Oil to the engine and see if it clears up - could be as simple as a sticky lifter. Or...low oil level. |

Sorry, is the primary (drive) output pulley not on the right side? That's where I figured he'd be hearing a bit of a ruckus if the bearings were bad, more likely to make crunchy noises, but still... My first thought was a problem with the lifters not filling and self-adjusting properly, but figured ruling the easy stuff out first might be better. I thought I had a rod knock on my bike at one time, general knocking noise. Turned out the nut on the crank to the stator who-haw was loose. It made noise everywhere. My clutch needs replacing, it is similarly noisy in general, clackity-rattle-rattle. |

my m2 has 29000 miles give or take. have have not tried pulling in the clutch while moving. had the back end on a stand , no noise accept for the belt squeaking , clean belt and no noise. tried sea foam for about 100 miles and change to new oil,no change still clattering . 2 years ago i had the stator replaced . could it be the back shock? the black o ring fwd of the shock is visible, never notice it being like that before. i did bang (light) it with a rubber hammer and nothing seems to be loose. thanks for the info but keep it coming please. bruce |

On my aircooled Buells, the primary is on the left, cams on the right. |

Some clattering from the cams is normal. The cam's driven gear is being forced back into the drive gear by valve spring pressure when the lifter is on the back of the ramp. Sportster cam sets used to be matched to reduce the play between the gears, but they stopped doing that some time ago. |

I had a noise coming from the right side as well and it was driving me insane. Thought something serious was going on. Come to find out one of my header pipes had rattled lose and was vibrating against the other. |

Scm2 has a point - I've had the nuts at the exhaust ports come loose, letting the chrome collar "clink" around. Took forever to find; as soon as I did I had a "DUH" moment. Loctite is your friend |

Check the front drive pulley yet? Maybe the splines are worn and is on its way out! |

Speaking of the drive pulley...have you checked your belt tension? It is possible to have the belt adjusted too loose. I found this out when changing my belt and isolators. I didn't want to over tighten so I went overboard on slack. The belt will slip and clatter side to side if too loose. Just a thought. |
