Hey Fellow Tubers, Got me a 1999 M2, and I am the one and only owner- bought it brand new 13yrs ago. Been largely a fantastic bike, and I have kept up with all the issues and the bike looks as good as new and rides even better. I just bought a 2008 Ulysses for commute/touring duties and I am going to let my beloved M2 go. I just don't have the room for multiple bikes right now, so I am prepping the bike for sale. Resale on the old tubers (especially one with 36k on the clock) is tough, to say the least. "Buell People" are not very common. Recently, I had replaced the starter and she started leaking oil. I took it to a local shop and I am good friends with the GM of the shop. I asked him to replace the crank/primary seal, which was leaking and diagnose the 'new' oil leak. They replaced the crank seal ($400) and said the base gaskets are leaking- another $400 or so. (they didn't find any leaks at the starter seal- my obvious pick) I said, "Look, I need this bike not to leak oil, so can you make it not leak for $1000?" He said, "Sure, we'll get on it." So, the bike is done and largely is awesome. They did new rings, new base & rocker gaskets, new plugs & honed the cylinders. The bike runs FANTASTIC, But.... The cases are leaking in the center. Noticeably. Not that it's dripping, but still. It's always had a little seepage there, but it's not 'leak free' - In the shops defense, it was hard to spot, with the base gaskets leaking, and those did need to be replaced. My question is this (thanks to those who read my long story) - short of a complete tear down, is there anyway to stop or at least slow-down the case leak? Again, it's not dripping, but seeps visibly. Tube-framed Buells are tough to sell when 100%, and one with a visible leak will be near impossible. Thoughts? Suggestions? Thank you in advance. Couple pics of her:

Mhevezi: From the MONEY you are paying out and the leak is still there, you need to get the FACTORY SERVICE MANUAL and PARTS BOOK for your YEAR/MODEL and learn to be your own MECHANIC because the technicians are just taking your MONEY !!! Are you sure that a technician has not cracked your cases ??? You should spray some brake cleaner on the cases and see exactly where the leak is coming from ??? |

Thanks guys, wish I could keep it. It's really a fun bike and runs better/pulls harder than my Ulysses. Sadly, I really can't. I do most of the work on the bike myself, but sometimes a job is just too large, even for me. It's pretty obvious that the middle seam on the cases is the leak point, and it's been damp there since about year 3. I know that the shop & I had a deal (no leaks for $1000 and it's still leaking) - and the dealer is totally going to work with me on payment. I haven't paid $1 yet, as I am riding the bike to evaluate the severity of the leak. Just wanted to know if the crowd of talented Buell Folks here has dealt with this leak before and have found solutions that do not involve a full, motor tear down. Thanks again & happy riding. |

Mine has seeped for 7 years. No reason to get rid of the bike, just put a towel under it if you don't want spots on your garage floor. Kilroy |

In 10yrs of ownership, seeping is normal, dripping is not. My mechanic has some sealant that can be applied to the outside of the seam to help slow or stop the leaks. Gonna try that next. Just don't want to sell a leaky bike. |

My 2000 m2 never leaked from there. Rocker boxes, yes. Whatever that wire is, going into the back of the transmission seeped a tiny bit before I gooped it. Never a drop directly under the cases, or at the centerline. Seems pretty clear, if the deal was NO leaks for $1G, they should be willing to fix it. I don't know of any local dealers that honest though. I've seen that for sale on local craigslist I think. It's a NICE bike (when the leak is not visible at least.) |

The case halves were put together with a caulk sealant, not a gasket. Seepage is not exactly "normal"...but not unusual either. They shouldn't have had to split cases to do base gaskets. Try retorquing the case half bolts and see if that helps any. |
