Author Message   Edgarr Posted on Thursday, April 19, 2012 - 12:33 pm:        I changed the gasket and changed the primary oil about a thousand miles ago after it sprung a leak. Everything was fine but it sprung another leak along the bottom of the case toward the back. The oil seal seams fine, and I did look at the offending area and did not see anything obvious that would have broken the gasket. I did use a torque wrench. I used the book, and followed it entirely, but it's leaking again. Are there better gaskets to use, or are there other tricks, or was I unlucky?   Jim2 Posted on Thursday, April 19, 2012 - 02:16 pm:        The updated gasket is a good gasket, metal with a rubber coating. The bolts holding the primary cover are all different lengths, are you sure you got the correct bolts in all of the right places? Are you sure it's not the starter gasket leaking? Did you make sure you installed the cover alignment spacers? Not sure what they are really called. There are two of them, one on the backside of the very front most hole and one in the very back. Also if you have a buildup of locktight on the holes your bolt might be bottoming to torque without actually pressing the cover down against the gasket the way it should.   Captainkirk Posted on Saturday, April 21, 2012 - 12:30 am:        It's very easy to fold over one of the "ears" around a bolt hole. It will leak like a sieve. You can see by using a light and carefully looking around the entire perimeter of the gasket paying special attention around the bolt holes. The second gasket started to leak in a different place after 700 mile of hard riding. I was careful to make sure that the gasket surface was clean, and that the new one was in place correctly. I tried to insure at the the different screws went into the correct holes, and didn't over tighten them. The gasket that was in there was paper, and the new one a reinforced paper with some rubber on it. I will look at it next week when the new gasket comes in.   Jim2 Posted on Wednesday, April 25, 2012 - 08:34 pm:        Edgarr, I may have been wrong about the newest gasket being metal with rubber coating. It may be reinforced paper with some rubber on it. I hope I didn't mislead you into buying a gasket you don't need and my apologies if that is the case. I spread a thin coating of hylomar around the back of the gasket before I install it. This helps to hold it in place and provides extra sealing. I've been able to go in and out of the primary cover about four times now re-using the same gasket each time with no problems/leaks.   Edgarr Posted on Wednesday, May 02, 2012 - 01:13 pm:        It seems that the gasket that I used was inferior to the HD/Buell gasket that I just installed. The new gasket was indeed metal with a rubber coating so It should last and the saga should end! I did use hylomar to hold the gasket in place. Thanks again.
