From the Snell Memorial Foundation.

quote:

Why should you replace your helmet every five years?

The five-year replacement recommendation is based on a consensus by both helmet manufacturers and the Snell Foundation. Glues, resins and other materials used in helmet production can affect liner materials. Hair oils, body fluids and cosmetics, as well as normal "wear and tear" all contribute to helmet degradation. Petroleum based products present in cleaners, paints, fuels and other commonly encountered materials may also degrade materials used in many helmets possibly degrading performance. Additionally, experience indicates there will be a noticeable improvement in the protective characteristic of helmets over a five-year period due to advances in materials, designs, production methods and the standards. Thus, the recommendation for five-year helmet replacement is a judgment call stemming from a prudent safety philosophy.

The key passage to use for that "judgment call" is: "The...recommendation is...by...helmet manufacturers".
It all depends, on how the helmet is stored, handled, cleaned, dropped or not, etc.
I had a Bell Star from about 1985 that I threw away around 2003 because the foam lining started to crumble to the touch. I think it could've been 'refurbished' but Bell won't do that anymore. Back when they were in So. Cal (long time ago) they would take your old shell and replace the inner stuff.
Anyway, I'd offer one of my old ones for just postage, but they're all pretty 'decorative'.

I love my Arai, I also like there removable cheek pads. The pads remove easily if involved in an accident allowing easer removal of the riders helmet.

Im also shopping for a new helmet as NHRA doesnt allow SNELL 2005 helmets anymoer.

I have an Arai that I race with, but cant drop 500+ on another one right now (and then another 2 on having it painted).
So I've been looking since last night on various sites for a helmet thats snell approved and looks ok for me to wear for a while until I get it repainted.
It sucks, many of the helmets out there are very loud in their graphics.

I've had three HJC helmets so far and like their hit and finish, and their price is usually quite good too.
Love my Arai, feels SO nice! But the price is much much highter (my pro trekker was 400 bucks for plain white)

Right now I have a HJC. Ithink it's the CL16. Very cheap at my local MC store. I think it was only 130 bucks. HJC has come a long way. DOT and Snell, fits perfectly and looks great. However, I got that helmet just as a stop gap until I got something better. So a Rockhard(O'Neal) Iron Maiden helemt is on the way!

I think fit and comfort is important. Different companies use different head types as their standard so you have to shop around to find a company producing a helmet with a head shape that corresponds to your head, and then get the correct size. It should also seem a little tight to start with. Then find the same helmet discounted on the internet and pay 1/2 the dealer price. Shoei fits me best and is my main helmet. Very comfortable, quiet and relatively light. I paid $300. for it and I've seen the same one for over $600. at some dealers. Flat black. Also, the Shoei dark screen is way better than the HJC version that I used before. It can still be used in poor light when the HJC would have been useless and dangerous.

I have a Scorpion Exo-1000 I got last year in a gray/silver color scheme that I'd like to be rid of. It doesn't fit very well, pulls my earbuds out and is a little heavier than my old, old HJC. $100.

It has a lot of great features, which is why I bought it - internal flip down visor is great and I like not having to worry about sun glasses with this lid. Fog free shield is also great, my old HJC doesn't have this so the Scorpion gets only cold weather use - keeping it from getting any kind of sweaty stank, it does have a nice soft antimicrobial liner with pump up cheek pads too, for a perfect fit. Integral chin curtain with EMS warning label so they know to release the air bladder before they remove your lid in the event of a crash. Wind tunnel testing makes it nice and stable at speed. Decent ventilation but I haven't had much need for that.

I'm a former MSF teacher and am pretty careful with my helmets; I only place them flat on the ground on the base, secured to my head or secured with a cable to the bike, or safely on a shelf in the garage - so they never get dropped... I always told my students not to trust a used helmet so I don't know that I should bother to try and sell it, but I'm putting this out there anyway.

It's a large 7 3/8-7 1/2 (59-60cm), I'll post an update with a pic if anyone is interested. Got the supplied bag and accessories (couple screws and instructions) Might even have the original box. This helmets has probably not been on my head more than 20-25 times.

DOT and Snell

Ok so the helmet that was my first choice (within my price range) was the speed & stregnth 1500 with the DVD drop down sunshield! Well the xl does not even fit over my head and they do not come in a 2 X so I came home with the Scorpion Exo 1100 patriot theme looks good fits good!
So i do have my Hjc CS-R1 inferno in XL up for grabs with clear and smoke shield!
