so i went to go get new plugs for the x1 (old ones fouled - fixed the problem tho) and asked for the 6R12's the manual says to use and the parts guy said part's obsolete and handed me 10R12A's.. are the two similar enough to work or have i been had by a lazy parts dealer? also, any other plugs i should consider? NGK's? | ||

The 6's are absolutely the wrong plug, and the 10's are "it." There was a service bulletin or some such tech notice back at the time... long before I even knew Buell existed LOL. | ||

GLAD YOU ASKED ??? Running TOO HOT a HEAT RANGE SPARK PLUG is basically the same as running your gas/air mixture TOO LEAN ... When the FUEL INJECTION(EPA 14.7)came out on the 1999 S3's and X1's it was found that the 6R12 spark plug was TOO HOT by one heat range step so the FACTORY put out a SERVICE BULLETIN stating to use only the 10R12 spark plugs ... One HEAT RANGE may not seem like big difference "BUT" if you are tuning an engine for every thing you can get out of it, IT SURE DOES !!! Example: "i" have a 1997 S3T(carburetor) and still run the 6R12 heat range because my carburetor is jetted richer than 14.7 to 1 fuel/air ratio ... As a matter of fact my carburetor it is jetted for 12.0 to 1 ratio and 10R12 plug would be too cold and gas foul(get wet with gas)... | ||

Hotter plugs have more insulator exposed to combustion gasses holding heat longer then cold plugs, the plugs must reach a certain temp to keep from "fouling out" to hot of plugs will melt, to cold of plugs will become fouled. | ||

The 10R12 seems the most 'sure' choice, anything else is contingent on cross-referencing. Since there's not much money saved on two spark plugs maybe twice a decade, why take a chance on anything else? These are available from American Sport Bike, so can be obtained from anywhere. "Best" will always reveal the 'Chevy vs. Ford' kind of debate. I'm sure they're all good, and doubt if there's any 'best'. | ||

Buellistic where did you get the H-D to Champion cross reference for years that always seemed to to be like pulling teeth and I never knew if the cross references I saw were real or not. I have always known Champion made Harley's plugs but I never found the direct cross just something like H-D to NGK or H-D to Autolite. Thanks | ||

"best", Ford or Chevy (or Toyota, or Honda)? For a long time, I used Champion only, because I like the name (!) espcially for a race bike. As a curiosity, now Champion is made in Mexico, and NGK is made in the USA ! | ||

"Pro Series" are SplitFire brand. It's a gimmick, and I have seen the ground electrodes come off, causing engine damage. Stay with a conventional type plug. "Harley" plugs are Champions unless they just switched brands. | ||
