Had an intermittent start problem once with my '01 X-1. Turned out the blade connector for the wire from the start switch to the starter wasn't seated correctly.

Easy to check .....

Just behind the front pulley you will see the starter. There is a wire with a spade terminal that plugs into the starter, it can back out but still look connected. I know because my bike wouldn't start and I had it towed home where the driver dropped it on its side. After all that I pushed the connector back in and it has been fine since. I check it now and then..

Corrosion in the fuses-fuse block did mine before.
Take each out, scrape it clean, WD40 and reinstall.

It looks dry in there under the seat but a fair amount of crap seems to be able to get at the back of the fuses from below.

Triman has the wire I'm talking about. The green wire w/a black sheath that plugs into the bottom of the starter near the speed sensor.

Go ahead and unplug it, and connect your volt meter. With the ign and stop/run switches on, you should see 12V every time you push the starter button. If so, plug it back in and you should be good.

You could short out the ignition switch. My '99 S3 had a similar issue last year and has been trouble-free electrically since I replaced mine.
