Had an intermittent start problem once with my '01 X-1. Turned out the blade connector for the wire from the start switch to the starter wasn't seated correctly. Easy to check ..... |

Just behind the front pulley you will see the starter. There is a wire with a spade terminal that plugs into the starter, it can back out but still look connected. I know because my bike wouldn't start and I had it towed home where the driver dropped it on its side. After all that I pushed the connector back in and it has been fine since. I check it now and then.. |

Corrosion in the fuses-fuse block did mine before. Take each out, scrape it clean, WD40 and reinstall. It looks dry in there under the seat but a fair amount of crap seems to be able to get at the back of the fuses from below. |

Triman has the wire I'm talking about. The green wire w/a black sheath that plugs into the bottom of the starter near the speed sensor. Go ahead and unplug it, and connect your volt meter. With the ign and stop/run switches on, you should see 12V every time you push the starter button. If so, plug it back in and you should be good. |

You could short out the ignition switch. My '99 S3 had a similar issue last year and has been trouble-free electrically since I replaced mine. |
