I have an '01 Cyclone with the 2001 M2/S3 shift linkage kit.I bought it from the original owner and it has always been hard to shift.I road it back in '02 or '03 and found it hard to shift then.He said while it was still under warranty they said it was "within parameters" and wouldn't do anything about it.I've ridden other M2's from '01 and '02 that were much easier to shift.
Does anyone have any thoughts?

Buellistic, this is all stuff I know and practice except, running the primary chain at 3/4"?I have other Buells and have always run the chain at factory spec, usually 1/2" and have never experienced tight shifting like on the M2.

I had the same problem till I followed LaFayette's advice. Now mine shifts like butter.

Adjusting your primary chain to 3/4" at tight spot is very easy for you to try and it will relieve excess pressure from your transmission shaft. If run at factory specs, eventually it may fry your shaft bearing. It did that to mine. It is very easy to put back again if you decide you don't like it that way.

If you try that and you have also followed the other suggestions then it may be time to inspect your shift drum, detent plate, and drum pins. I did have a damaged spot on one of the shift drum pin channels that I cleaned up with emory cloth. That helped even more. I really believe that all of the factors mentioned need attention to obtain good smooth effortless shifting.

Mine started shifting hard when the shift drum detent plate started to go. If you have the old-style aluminum plate, the edges wear quickly. Also, if your drum pins are working loose, it cocks the plate sideways, wears unevenly (hard shifting) and eventually snaps off the e-clip, leaving you stranded (and unable to shift).
It's a cheap part (around $15.00) and an evening's work. If you even THINK this is a possibility, change it before you get stranded.
