just posting to vent... i am working on a 1999 x1 and i cannot believe how some people "maintain" their bikes. the bike i have had a set os crossroads clip on, i changed them to regular handlebars. The PO tightened the clamp bolts so tight that they are bent and the threads are shot. now i have take the triple clamp off and get the bolt removed and the threads tapped. the primary was NEVER tightened to the point that there are grooves inside the primary cover. just venting, thanks for listening.

other side of the coin , your saving it & making it your bike in the process

On the bright side, consider yourself lucky that he had the chain too loose as opposed too tight..Also, I'm willing to bet that he made the drive belt too tight. You may want to take a look at that.

I played this game before also. It took me 2 yrs to get my X1 straightened out. It was owned by some air-force pilot who just thrashed it and put it away in between deployments. The tires were literally pointed from cornering and it was horrible to ride. Once i got it all fixed up it has been one of the best bikes i have ever had.
